Repo was slightly ahead of its time in terms of independent movies that were to come out in the late 80' on. The deleted scenes have that in-between melancholy of youth vibe much like the movies Slaker, Clerks and Amateur (1994).

There's a HUGE misconception that the so-called "Neutron Bomb" was intended solely to "kill people, leave BUILDINGS intact." Not EXACTLY. The more proper description of Dr. Sam Cohen's "firecracker" would be a LOW (for a thermonuclear device) yield, ENHANCED radiation weapon. Like any two-stage thermonuclear weapon (which started with the 1952 "Ivy Mike" shot at Enewetak Atoll (it was a device obviously not practical as a deployable weapon, since its cryogenic equipment gave the entire setup a weight of 82 tons!), it consisted of a relatively small "primary" and a larger yield "secondary", both selectable with fusion "boosting". The casing of such a weapon is neutron-dense only about the primary enough to ensure sufficient neutron reflection to get the secondary to trigger, if selected at all, else, the secondary undergoes little to no fission or fusion at all, but instead is spread over the target area as fallout products. Or, the secondary can be dispensed with altogether, as is common with nuclear artillery shells. The intent is to shower the target area with a sufficient concentration of neutrons to penetrate enemy armored vehicles or even command bunkers, incapacitating and/or killing enemy personnel. What happens insofar as the nuclear explosion, which is STILL a big "Bang!" compared to any conventional artillery shells, to destructive effect against enemy positions is an incidental "benefit", and indeed, since this was to take place likely over GERMANY, not considered good at all! Two examples of enhanced radiation weapons were the W70 warhead and the W79 artillery shell; the latter being fitted within standard 8 inch artillery shells, typically fired from an M110 howitzer (also could be fired from a USN surface vessel that had 8 inch guns), they had a range of up to 15 miles. Obviously, more typical nuclear weapons could have been used, but the ability to lessen the destructive blast while keeping the main reason for the warhead, i.e., to kill and/or incapacitate enemy personnel with a dose of neutron radiation, was considered enough reason to make it the only nuclear artillery shell in the US Army inventory. The MGM-52 Lance missile system, which deployed the W70, had an effective range of between 45 to 75 miles. While this would be more than enough "clearance" for the crew and/or nearby friendly personnel, even with a 50 kT to 100 kT weapon more typical of what we had in the USAF inventory, it should be kept in mind that, in event a shooting war broke out in Central Europe, it was quite likely the battlefield situation could become, er...FLUID, with nuclear artillery and/or tactical missile units having to scoot about from cover to cover position to avoid enemy tactical strikes, maybe themselves using nukes and/or chemical weapons, and the possibility of being overrun and/or captured by Warsaw Pact armored units was quite real! There were many war gaming scenarios which had Soviet and DDR armored units reaching the Rhine river within 72 hours of initiation of hostilities and threatening the main NATO bases, depots, and command centers, so NATO would have to make quick decisions as to whether to deploy the nukes or not, often based on incomplete information! Better to at least minimize the blast/heat damage, especially if a Soviet Guards Armored division decided to bivouac in a West German town for the night! Dr. Cohen objected strenuously to the "kill people, spare buildings" concept of the Enhanced Radiation Weapons, pointing out that even at their lowest yield (0.5 kT for the W70, 0.1 kT for the W79), they were still nuclear weapons with terrifying destructive yields due to heat and blast. The detonation altitude of either would have depended on terrain and cloud cover; but a W79 set for a 10 kT blast would have flattened buildings and killed a lot of folks within about 2 km of its "ground zero", it would have also knocked out even their T-10 heavy tanks within about 0.5 km of GZ. However, within even their T-64, T-72, and T-80 tanks, fitted with interior lead-impregnated anti-spall blankets and Explosive, Reactive Armor on the outside (which did attenuate radiation somewhat), most tank/artillery crews inside their vehicles within about 2 km "line of sight" of the explosion would have received a LETHAL dose, being unable to function within about 15-30 minutes. Most personnel OUTSIDE, not already blinded or burned by the intense flash, or crushed and/or flayed by the blast, would be dying of the neutron radiation dose, within that 2 km radius. Just outside that "total destruction" zone, up to about 5-8 km, depending on detonation altitude and terrain, most personnel inside their vehicles or in a bunker or culvert would be intact, with some temporarily blinded, but those outside would (1) receive a varying degree of flash burns or physical injuries and (2) would, in most cases be incapacitated within several hours, but many would recover IF they got immediate medical treatment. It would be the burden of that medical care that would destroy the combat effectiveness of the targeted enemy unit; and if they ignored their casualties and pressed on with their objectives with surviving personnel, fit enough for combat, imagine the terrible effect on unit morale! Indeed, part of the reason the Warsaw Pact never did come across the interior German border was that uncertainty of what would happen if each side started using "tactical" nukes, and what they feared the most was MUTINY, likely from DDR, Czechoslovakian, and Polish forces that, in effect, would have said, "We didn't sign up for THIS shit!" Judging by the performance of the largely Soviet-supplied and trained Iraqi forces in Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom, along with IDF experience against Egyptian and Syrian forces likewise equipped and trained, if that anticipated Warsaw Pact strike through the Fulda Gap or across the Northern German Plain (or both) had happened, likely it would not have been necessary to resort to even "tactical" nuclear weapons, as the Soviet and Warsaw Pact forces likely would have gotten their asses kicked, BADLY. We'll never know. Today, we try to "poke the Bear" re: Ukraine, and closer to their home turf, on lands they consider THEIRS, and methinks that's very DUMB. We could still "win" a shooting war, but likely the cost will be far greater than we anticipate, and certainly more than enough to give serious regrets in failure to negotiate a peaceful settlement. Yes, we "won" the so-called "Cold War", but it's a NEW "ballgame" folks, and we don't want to "play" it with last season's strategy, now, do we?

astute observations and especially so due to not being either from Manchester or London which is very important to the tapestry of the identity of the characters and their personas,...maybe it was one of the first films to rally show the breakdown of society or the manic emptyness of the metropolis of London town .....back then renditions of human beings however flawed were still able to be shown and Labute is accurate when he mentions that we pull for Johnny yet one of the points made on here was that it was pleasing to see him get the kicking in the film....yes thats the whole point....we know how annoying he is...how wrong he is...but hes like the others in the film they are all imperfect and needy and rather lost.......all 'naked'...Johnny was a polarizing character in an era where judgement wasnt as widespread due to the absence of social media.....also film need not be a facsimile of total reality and Leigh manages to still relay that its an simulated artform via some comedic moments and haunting score....is it his best film?..probably....although Another Year and Meantime come close

That was a good influence on me, that film. Whenever I got a job, I would always create a very strict bullshit version of a Repo Code that I would adhere to rigidly, to the exhasperation of all my workmates, Consequently, I outlasted all my workmates, managers and directors in all my jobs, and was always and still am the last man standing.

Beautiful interview. Though, maybe success late in Kieslowski's life isn't quite the tragedy Zanussi says it is - considering it was success and it's trappings that largely led Kieslowski to quit filmmaking, it could be that - would it were he was successful earlier in his career - we may have actually had LESS of his films, not more.

J. Frank Parnell is not crazy when he talks about having 100 chest x-rays a year. If each chest x-ray is 0.1 msv, 100x0.1=10 msv which is about the same as one chest CT scan. Radiation hormesis is when low dose radiation can have a positive effect. Check it out. A CT/PET scan can top out at ~25 msv in one dose!
