קול ה' קורא "במעמקי הנשמה האנושית קול ה' קורא בלא הרף, מהומת החיים יכולה רק להמם את הנפש, עד שלא תשמע ברוב עיתות חייה את הקול הקורא הזה. אבל בשום אופן לא תוכל לעקור את היסוד, את השורש והעיקר של הקול הזה, שהוא באמת כל עצם החיים האנושיים". כך מתאר הראי''ה קוק את פנייתו התמידית של הבורא לנבראים, פנייה שלצערנו אנחנו לא שומעים. קול ה' לא קורא רק בלב האדם אלא בכל ברייה, בכל אטום, בכל מולקולה. קול ה' הוא אותה אנרגיה שמחייה את כל הבריאה ומגמתה אחת: חיבור. אם רוצים לשמוע את קול ה' צריכים לייחס לו הכול, לראות שהכול זה הוא, וכל מה שקורה מגיע ממנו. ואם מתפרצים כך בעקביות בהשתוקקות ומנסים להגיע אליו, בסופו של דבר מוצאים אותו בפנים בתוכנו. גם אם לא נרצה לשמוע אותו, ואפילו נתאמץ מאוד לאטום את עצמנו אליו, סופנו שנשמע אותו. כמו שכותב הראי''ה קוק: "אכן לשווא גם כל מאמצי הבריחה ממנו וכל התחבולות להשתקתו, קול ה' לא ייפסק, זכרו לא יָסוּף, לעולם ירעם עליהם בתוכם ובנפשם פנימה". דווקא ככל שנשתדל יותר להשתיק את קול ה' בנו, ננסה להתנהג כאילו הוא לא קיים בעולם ואין לו פניות אלינו, כך הוא יזעזע וירעיש יותר את עולמנו. מטרתו של הבורא לעורר את האדם, להעלות אותו מתהום הנשייה של האהבה העצמית אל אהבת הזולת. וכשם שאדם פונה לאחר וכשהוא לא שומע אותו הוא נאלץ להרים את הטונים, כך הבורא מגביר את קולו עד שכבר לא נוכל שלא לשמוע אותו: צאו כל אחד מעצמו והתאחדו. כך או אחרת הבורא ישיג את מטרתו, ונתחיל לגלות אותו בינינו.
