Interesting build! Have you investigated how you'll automate it/track? Or will this be a manual dome you need to move every so often?
@Anvilcjl
@Anvilcjl 5 ай бұрын
It’s pretty low tech. If I wanted to automate it I’d provably have to replace all the wheels with a steel track. This summer I’m working on making a slide for the top cover so I can slide it to the back i stead of muscling it down. Safer that way. I also have to work on a lip to replace the waterproof fabric o currently have at the bottom to fill the gaps.

That is so awesome! I am going for a tandem jump on may 20th. I've never been, and have always wanted to. Love the video, keep being awesome!

What size of wheels are those?
@Anvilcjl

4" fixed (non swivel), $29 on Amazon for 4. I recommend them; they're very sturdy, they don't skew easily, silent and rugged. 300lb load capacity each wheel. search for: 4 Pack 4" Castor Wheels on Red Polyurethane, non swivel.

@@Anvilcjl My dome is pretty stiff to turn with the small 2 inch wheels. I am trying to decide if I can deal with it or put the bigger wheels on.

It's been on hold for a while because it's winter. I made 2 covers for the opening in the fall and covered everything with plastic for now. I think the plan is to do the main part of the dome with chicken wire, paper mache and waterproof paint. I will try that on the covers first and see if it works before I do the entire dome. I can't do the mache when it's too cold because the glue needs to be at a better temperature. Apparently some major domes have been done with paper in the past to save on weight, so it's not as crazy as it might sound.

For a self build this is looking really good. I'm subscribing to watch your progress but there's no pressure to get it done quickly. Do what you can when you can. Clear Skies.

What are you going to cover the dome with?
@Anvilcjl
@Anvilcjl 3 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking something lightweight. Maybe Luan over the top and then canvas over that and the rest, or maybe even paper mache. I read that the dome at West Point was done with paper, and a few others as well, to reduce weight compared to copper, and it would be very cheap. Then the top layer would be a waterproof paint.

To answer some very old questions (didn't realize they were asked because somehow they ended up in a spam folder)... 1. Rocky / rockstar didn't die. 2. He did go through a rough patch about the time we were transitioning to solid foods but he did ok 3. I gave him to a rehab specialist. I wish that I had kept him. 4. The rehabber thought he had cataracts or something so I think he became a pet to someone else instead of released. 5. To answer Pudd, I think you have to give them tons of contact all the time. I think when they jump at you, that's kind of how they move around... they jump onto things. One time he somehow jumped out of his cage, crawled into our room and took up residence in my GF's shoes... in the middle of the night. I was wondering why the dog was acting weird and and waking us up, then we figured it out. It was weird because before that he seemed so helpless, and then all of a sudden he's doing a jailbreak and roaming around on his own!

I have 4 one week old flying squirrels and I feed them "just born" puppy replacer that is by far the best thing:)

Thanks Tyler. I've heard a number of different things from vets and rehab people, so I'm not sure if there's only one type of milk in the whole world that will work. Many squirrels in other videos seem to do very well nursing off a cat, for example, so I would think that milk made for kittens should be fine. The main thing initially, I think, is to make sure the squirrel stays hydrated, even if just with water. If you do that you have some time to get the ideal milk substitute.

my pet flying squirrel is 6-7 months old. i was told that they bond to one person. i used to get him out of his cage in his pouch & be able to pet him in his pouch when he was in the pouch, also when in his cage but now he lunges at me & i freak out & jerk my hand back. i haven't been able to get him out of the cage for a while cuz if i put my hand in the cage to get him out, he gets all territorial & attacks. am i doing something wrong? u prob dont know, im looking for answeres everywhere.

@lutdabs And also, his fur was pretty new, and not fully grown in. I think he didn't grow completely normally as he might have in the wild, but he did reach adulthood and I gave him to a rehab person.
@Anvilcjl

@lutdabs No, his fur was never very fluffy, probably because I DIDN'T give him a bath the way his mother would have, and he was too young to do it himself.

Please note, the formula 1:1 ration was WRONG; this was too concentrated. Also, Kitten formula from a pet store is better than human baby formula. He ended up having a serious dehydration problem because of these errors.
