Bitumen paint is a waste of time, the post will still rot eventually. The post was also warped, so the type of level you used is not a true reading. Postcrete is also a waste of time. And a gate post for a farm gate shouldn't be set in level.

You should never rely on a jack whilst working on a car. That's a massive safety hazard. Always have the car resting on Axel stands/Jack stands. Also you shouldn't let the brake caliper hang because you could cause a leak in the brake lines.

I have an alternative technique. I use a plate with an eye with 4 holes in the plate. Find the good wood in the old post and then screw the plate in using the longest screws you have. Use an old log as a pivot and use an 8 foot post as the lever. Have the log as close to the old post hole as you can and then use strong webbing to attach the end of the 8 foot post through the eye of the plate. Send the webbing round a couple of times for strength. Set up the lever and then stand (jump up and down) on the far end of the post and lever the remains of the old post out. Comes out like extracting a big tooth. If it's still firm, drill down with a long bit between the concrete hole and the old wood all the way round to loosen is from the hole 👍

Now when you get posts like these from merchants they are usually wet through. So when the bitumen paint goes on your actually sealing the moisture in the post. Much better to actually burn the bottoms instead of using bitumen.

How not to install a gate post. As said you have sealed the moisture in and post WILL rot from the inside out. At the least you should have left the bottom unpainted I give this post a maximum of 3 years before it’s gone. Before you try correcting me I’m a fencing contractor of 18 years.

Seeing 15v+ at idle is on the high side and the battery light is meant to indicate a charging fault, not a battery fault. If it has an old skool alternator, I reckon the voltage regulator on it is knackered, but if it is controlled by a module, the higher voltage may be normal. That is because traditional car alternators just regulate the voltage, leaving the battery to draw whatever amperage it can, but modern systems control the charge rate, with voltages sometimes higher than we are used to seeing. If your alternator has been running at high voltages for long periods, it may have overcharged and damaged the battery. The above was before I viewed on and saw the real cringe with the red alternator lead dangling, without any suggestion you had disconnected the battery. It was live and ready to arc against anything metallic with a path to earth. I blew a hole in a car radiator on a Mk2 Fiesta that way many years ago. I suspect your alternator killed your last battery and is slowly cooking the new one.
@handyandyuk
@handyandyuk Ай бұрын
Hi, Thanks for the info, I've got a new alternator ordered as I was concerned the over charging may damage battery as I paid £205 for that 😅
@matthewjenkins1161
@matthewjenkins1161 Ай бұрын
@@handyandyuk Make sure you disconnect your battery before working on the alternator and it is best practice disconnect the earth terminal first. That way if your spanner accidentally touches any other earthed part, there is no risk of short circuit arcing.

Hi there mate great video I replaced the Cylinder head gasket on my astra mk5 1.4 z14xep which I believe is the same as this engine. I didn't do the timing chain my freind did it he put the chain on and did the timing. He turned the engine over i said to him it had no compression. I think the timing is out by 180 degs i realised this video is an old video. If it was out by 180 the exhaust valves would be open instead of the inlet am i correct in thinking i have done cambelts but never done a chain. When I turn the engine over nothing is hitting its not locking up just dont hear any compression. Thanks in advance
@handyandyuk
@handyandyuk 2 ай бұрын
Hi, Back in day before the ECU took over. It would have backfired if it was wrongly set up I.E. inlet valves and outlet the opposite way round, as you still get compression. A chain essentially replaces a belt and does the same thing make sure it's turning and the right time in sequence. It needs checking throughly to make sure everything is correct. Compression needs checking and if you absolutely have nothing then that may idicicate problems elsewhere. These do have a lot of sensors that control timing for fuel . The cam sensor for instance if that's not picking up it won't start . I think when i started my corsa first time it spluttered into life as the cam sensor was off slightly. If you have changed or intend to change any of the sensors buy decent ones I bought some off ebay because they were cheaper and they made the cars and vans I've have run worse .. So my advice is to go through the work done and check everything and narrow it down it may be something as simple as a sensor ..

Hi mate, I'm having an extension built with new 350 cavity walls, the existing is 330 but I want a flush finish, I'm having the new wall d&d obviously but how do I make up the 20mm discrepancy on the existing wall, would you fix another piece of plasterboard to the wall first, ( glued or screwed?) then just d&d the whole lot new and old and line completely flush, be interested to hear your thoughts mate, cheers 👍🏻
@handyandyuk
@handyandyuk 2 ай бұрын
If you are bringing the level out to match existing wall . Then the dot and dab should bring this up to 20mm thickness of a board 12.5 mm so the adhesive behind board would make that gap up
@ETB9090
@ETB9090 2 ай бұрын
@@handyandyuk hi mate, the new wall would be dot and dab which is 20mm wider than the existing, but I want to line right through flush as one, someone suggested dot and dab a piece of 9.5 to the existing first to make them more or less level, then dot and dab over that with the new as one flush level throughout, what do u think ?
