I had a Macbook Pro 2012 model for over ten years from 2013-2023. I upgraded the RAM/hard drive to an SSD so a couple of tweaks over the years but on the whole I never had a single issue with it. Prior to that (and since that) I've had Windows devices and I have to say the MacBook wins experience wise in every category. It was a joy to use. I would like to get another one sometime but, although I could afford one, I just can't justify the cost during a cost of living crisis when that money could go on other more essential things.

Yeah no I have to agree with this. The build quality of a MacBook is not something that’s ever been nearly even matched. I’ve used 3 older (2017/2018ish) MBPs though and 2 of them had awful sticky keys which had slightly scarred me. I’ve got an M3 MBP on the way and I already know I’m going to love it!

Windows laptops have begun to catch up on battery life, but in general, Macs offer reliability that just can't be beat. So many times when I was on windows I'd charge my laptop fully, open it and bam, I find that the thing is warm and also dead. I've once gone 2 and a half days on battery with 7+7+3h of use until it died just to test how much I could use it. At the end of that was a 3h lecture and it was at 17% at the start and carried me through until it got to 1% then I plugged it in. To know you can depend on your tech to, not fail essentially, is fantastic. That's without even mentioning the keyboards, sound quality (the Air is better than any windows laptop I've heard even from Dell or HP). Best investment in myself I've ever made. Definitely NEVER returning to windows
@brandonkennedy5 күн бұрын
@@messicomps344 Fantastic points there - I agree, plus in my experience windows laptops just don’t hold a charge after a few years.. potentially due to how they manage the battery but I’m not sure. Either way buying the air has also been one of the best buys tech wise for me too!
@vhateg4 күн бұрын
That is because sleep mode is poorly implemented on Windows. macOS runs on consistent Apple hardware, so it doesn't really have to bother that much with different ACPI implementations and hardware quirks as Windows does. Also, Windows is not quite up there in quality. You are not the first person to complain about the inconsistency of Windows' "Modern Sleep", and you will not be the last. I understand your comment is written from the perspective of a user, rather than an engineer, but there are some interesting reasons behind a lot of the things. But, please, please, PLEASE just shut down your computer. I never understood this fashion of just closing the lid and calling it a day. It doesn't work like that, it is not a phone. You are supposed to shut it down when not using it. Since Windows 10, shutting down simply acts as hibernation, so turning on is quite fast.
@brandonkennedy3 күн бұрын
@@vhateg When using it for work throughout the day shutting it down is a massive time waste especially when you’re in and out of meetings - I’m still surprised that the windows engineers haven’t put more of a priority in mimicking that of apples sleep mode. I know it’s easier said than done but would really help bridge a gap.

Depends on the workload, I could see my M1 getting pretty hot with all the dev tools open and compiling code constantly (hot reload). That said, I also have multiple browsers open to quickly test between browser engines, but yeah.I recently switched to the new 16 inch because of that. Also, some devs have far more performance intensive workloads than I do, e.g. if you are working on video games in Unity or Unreal, so just see whether or not a macbook air works perfectly fine for your workload.

Budget wise stuck between choosing between a M3 Air with 8GB/512GB and 16GB/256GB for Office use (corporate). Typically Office Suite, Teams, Websites and now and then (maybe 5% of the time) very light photoshop (Canva level). My mind says 8GB/512GB because the extra storage space can double as swap RAM and if you have the smaller drive space version (256GB) then you might have to do the external drive life, which is very inconvenient and potentially risky (theft, data loss etc). Looking to have a functional highly portable laptop for the next 4-5 years with the same use case. Do you perhaps have a suggestion?
