Jesus and his father decided to save mankind, and Jesus was willing to die so we wouldn't be punished for our sins if we are truly repentant, and sorry and make effort not to do them again. Jesus greatest pain was not physical it was that he knew he was being sin for us, and that his father hates sin. and Jesus was our sin. and He was in emotional pain that his father might not accept him being separated by sin. But God was happy with his son. And we need to be so thankful for that.

Jesus died at the Cross for the Original Sin, the sin of Eve and Adam. When they transgressed, they committed treason against God. So God could not kill them because of his plan. Instead that sin hung over mankind's heads. That's why we are all born in sin. The Original Sin was never paid for and that's why Jesus died at the Cross to free mankind.
