I am European and I own quite a few handguns and rifles. I don’t think it’s particularly ‚cool‘ to have guns around the house, I just love going to the range or go hunting. Maybe thinking it’s ‚cool’ to have a gun is what’s the problem with American gun culture? PS: I am ex military, so handling weapons safely just becomes a part of everyday life and needs to be done. Maybe Americans with a military background are more reasonable as well.

Not all of us 'Europeans' are unarmed. You just can't justify 'self-defence' as a reason to add a weapon to your license. There has to be a 'genuine' reason to own said weapon, hunts, range regular, re-enactor, antique collector etc. etc. You have to have a safe and a police interview first to make sure you aren't a psycho. Sure it's not as libertarian as the US but it never crosses my mind that I'm gonna catch a stray.
