Martin has written (and performed!) quite a few rather good songs! This is my favourite one of his. He was already a fixture on the Bristol and wider acoustic music scene on the semi pro circuit under the name Martin John when I came across him in the early 2000s. Good bloke. We formed something of a mutual support group when both of us were in the throes of marital difficulties. He moved away from Bristol, but not as far as I did!

@@JamesGale1 My eldest son lives in Bristol (Knowle) with his wife and two daughters. He was born in West Yorkshire, where I still live. Both my sons have done pub and club gigs in the past. I did too -- many, many years ago.

Similar musical 'career' path! Like you, I was doing pub/club gigs for a while, including for a time after I moved over to Sweden in '09 - quite a few to old folks' homes and the like too in the latter stages over here, until the local authority funding ran out... I have one son, looking after his mother, earlier in Stockwood, Bristol, now just outside Keynsham. He's a muso too. Daughter, her hubby and their son are on the west side of Bath. I haven't been back to UK for 8 years. Managing to keep in touch via the magic of the internet... I had a spell in South Yorks in the early '70s - I was a geologist for t'Coal Board. Had a bedsit in Sheffield!

I think this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, despite its inherent sadness. I like all the versions you mention. Other excellent versions are Gram Parsons' duet with Emmylou Harris and also Jim Messina's more upbeat rendition. Your duet here is a fine version too! Enjoyed!
