I have listened to at least 20 of these Somerset Maugham short stories and this is my favorite so far…. Janet is the most compelling and consequential character even though she is introduced much later in the story!

This story definitely has a moral and is often true to life. A woman works on her emotions, it's not the same for a man. She had a good marriage and it's a shame to throw it away for a flight of fancy. 😮

Love these readings. I listen to the soothing voice until I fall asleep at night, then pick it up the next night. A private joy. Thank you for sharing these.

I’m trying to wait to get to the end of this story before I comment. I’m hoping Mary’s character and level of common sense improves. I’m about halfway through and I’m feeling incredibly irritated at how truly stupid this woman is… Well written as ALWAYS. S. Maugham is magnificent, but OMG Mary - what an IDIOT 🙄🙄🙄

Now, that was a surprise, that ending. Regret is a worthless endeavor, a damaging habit, and the very opposite of a good night's sleep. So glad to hear Maugham knew that too.

An odd kettle of fish. I tend to agree that the couple should have given into their lustful attraction and gotten it out of their systems. Her husband would have taken her back, Morton returned to Borneo and life would have gone on for all of them. No way, will Morton ever marry her.
