It's funny that this famous R&B song was inspired by THE quintessential blonde. Oh, the song writer re-wrote it for Gladys, but who inspired the original? Songwriter Jim Weatherly telephoned his buddy Lee, but Lee's girlfriend answered the phone. "I can't talk," she said, "I'm catching the midnight plane to Houston to visit my folks." That inspired the original version of this song. Of course Jim Weatherly's friend was Lee Majors, and his girlfriend who made the remark that inspired the original song was of course Farrah Fawcett. Don't believe it? Look it up.

I hated this song when it first came out. My boyfriend's ex girlfriend had moved to Georgia and his friends teased him that he was following her. I was 16. Cut me some slack for immaturity, lack of confidence, and being the outsider in this group of lifelong friends. Fortunately, today they are MY friends despite the marriage not working out. Despite their initial impression that I was "High society", "from the rich side of the tracks (please, my parents were teachers 🙄), being a cheerleader and just not belonging, they quickly discovered that I could take a joke, laugh at myself, had zero judgement, and was loyal to the Nth degree. Today that song reminds me of the lifelong friendships established with my ex and his friends, of giving people a chance, admitting that you are not always right. Plus, Gladys Knight's voice is just mesmerizing. Great memories.

When I first heard that song, I was in my remote city in some island in the Caribbean. My whole neighborhood was crazy about Gladys and the Pips. I wonder if they ever know the travelling power of their fame! I did not speak a word of English and yet I knew all her songs by heart. I was between 10 and 12 years old! When I traveled to the States at age 20 and realized that I spoke English fluently from learning all these songs!
