It is a kind of US marines. Every imperial world has its own Planetary Defence Force from which new regiments for the imperial guard are founded and sent to the endless wars and battlefields in the galaxy and they never return to their homeworld. The imperial guard are untold billions of soldiers and the backbone of the imperial forces. Most are infantery men, some are specialists due to their homeworlds traditions. But there are also regiments made of criminals coming from overcrowded Megahive worlds to serve as the first wave.

Orks are non ironically the only faction where the average ability of the average soldiers are equal to the Guard. Orks are physically stronger but can’t hit anything to save their skin. In any combat situation the average Ork boi is equal to the average guardsman. Problem is, Orks outnumber the Guard about 8/10 times.

Marines are elite unit you send in to do a mission and retreat. Astartes couldn't handle prolonged fighting that guardsmen do. They simply don't have the number for it.

@@Suksass "Astartes couldn't handle prolonged fights" True, because when you have Astartes, fight ends in days if not months. I'm not really deep into Space Marine lore, but the longest one I know was Horus Heresy and that only last 7 years, albeit it was Space Marines vs Space Marines. Also, there's a saying: "To take a town, send a legionary. To take a city, send a squad. To take a world, send a company. To take a culture, send a Chapter." Guards couldn't do things like this. They're basically the paperweight of the Imperium.

@@theotv5522 Guards are the backbone of imperium. The reason Astartes were backbone of Imperium pre heresy is because Emperor was alive, Primarchs and their genes were around as well. And they fought humans. Emperor is nearly dead now and they only recently regained two primarchs. The gene was in short supply so they couldn't throw Astartes to die like they do guardsmen like they did in good old days. Doesn't work that well against xenos and chaos marines.

@@theotv5522I think you should read more on the Guard. If you think a full Battle Group of the IG (50 regiments) couldn’t absolutely crush a SM chapter in a planetary deployment you’re either overestimating the sh*t out of Marines or wildly underestimating the Guard. As was previously stated, Marines are incapable of sustaining Mass warfare for long. There’s a reason most Imperium Battles will be some variation of "the Astartes bravely Spearheaded the main assault while the Guard fought with the bulk of the enemy forces. Marines are infinitely more capable Soldiers, but they don’t have the numbers of equipment to endure mass warfare. In fact, if for some reason the average Space Marines chapter faced the average IG battle group (50 regiments), the marines would literally loose due to lack of ammunition.

@@theotv5522 Ask Leviathan how that worked out for them. The GUARD...with literally no one else helping them stopped Leviathan in it's tracks. When the Space Marines showed up Leviathan was pushed off course and had to go in another direction to find biomass to make up it's losses.
