The sad and disgusting truth is that this is a normal occurrence that repeats on a regular basis in many many families. We as a society, try to think of ourselves as more civilized and honorable, always trying to do and be better, and to stand up against injustice. The reality is a horror story of laziness, apathy, cruelty, shame, insecurity, fear, and complete disregard for any outside of themselves. We used to be better, but now, unless there is something to be personally gained from the interaction, we turn a blind eye, shame/shun, or ostracize those who speak up or out.
