Thomas is 100% correct, make it your own ,put your stamp on it,would have added another dimension to DT playing it like Portnoy would be same old same old DT . Thomas and Virgil,Derrick,Aquillies,Marco would have brought another sound and style to Dream Theatre lifted them up a notch. As good as Mike Mangini is I felt he was just a cockatoo he did it for whatever reason I guess money lift his profile endorsements ect ,not even in the same ballpark as the others professionally by standing on their terms .

Great interview Joel. Make sure to mention who was the great drummer in your high school before you took over! :) Love seeing how you advanced in your drumming career over time. -Randy

oh well. im a dream theatre fan. I Like Thomas playing and style... just weird interview. I don't think half of the fan base of DT is drummers ahahah made me laugh. coz we are talking about a legendary line up, as John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess, not simply musicians, considering that for decades they were the most inspiring musicians out there eheh so, Thomas, you're great, but seems like you underestimate the other components of the group

I know Thomas since the 90's. He's so authentic and pure and funny. He is a showman for sure, but I think he is not an actor, he's just himself. As I saw/listened the audition I knew: his outfit, haircut and tongue out when concentrating and over all: promoting his own ideas... So as Dream Theater pretend to be at the edge (yes, they are great musicians) it rather seems like a business model. Well, why not, they also have to pay their bills.

Dream Theater producers were genious on that documentarie auditition. Serious good move. It was really for drummers in the fan base, and that was awesome to see a little like background stuff for audition. Thomas (after years of course) it is super nice to talk about it.

I think Thomas was the best candidate at this time. They chose Mangini for other reasons that have nothing to do with his drumming performance. I'm not saying that he's a bad drummer, but that he wasn't the most suitable, at least of the 7 chosen. Lang or Marko was the best ones.

Sounds a lot like complaining in my book. Dude you weren't even a fan of thier music. Why even audition??? What if you were given the gig??? What did you quit after a couple of years??? Which would've been a waste of their time??? Idk you seem passive aggressive and complaining.??? That's a terrible attitude for a supposed professional musician.. 👎

I don't think it's fair to say that they were doing it just for PR or they already knew they would pick Mangini. Mangini definitely didn't seeing his reaction when they told him he got the gig. If that was fake then he is an even better actor than he is a drummer, and if he didn't then how could they be sure they would've picked him by the end. Of course I've asked myself if they truly considered to pick a foreign citizen, but the whole process looked genuine to me. Moreover I don't see how anyone could regard Thomas as "one of the guys who didn't get the gig". He did great, they said they liked him a lot, I think that was very good PR for him.

All dream theater had to do was just wait a bit for Portnoy to get his bearings back. Mangini is a great drummer no doubt, but Portnoy was family to them. They should've just waited.

You think Mangini is a more talented drummer than Lang, Minnemann, or Donati? Not a fucking chance. Nobody is a more technical drummer than Virgil Donati. Mangini is a very robotic and boring drummer. Has no creativity in his playing. Watch Marco Minnemann with the Aristocrats. Mangini could never hang in that band. Dream Theater is so unbelievably overrated. Very busy and boring and pretentious music. That's why Mangini was perfect for them. DT would have only stifled the creativity of the drummers they auditioned with the exception of Mangini.
