It looks like a great project, but the most valuable thing would be to learn how it worked over 12 years. Lotsa youtube videos on DIY and purchased storm shelters, very little info on how well they worked.

Looks like what I want to build. Like the idea of tying the roof into the concrete walls. Royalty doesn't come over to much.😂

You can always use it for fruit and vegetable storage, underground temperatures are 55° and lower usually so it will make the perfect refrigerator.

If you lose power during a heavy storm, how will that sump pump perform? Maybe have a small rescue inflatable boat inside mounted on the wall just in case...

Nice job! I’ve been planning on doing my shelter for a few years and have seen many good and worse ones! I believe maybe if you thought out a little longer befor starting you could have improved your shelter! Otherwise! If it works for you! To hell with what others think! Bravo!

Pretty good job for someone with no experience! I would suggest pouring a 4" concrete roof slightly dome shaped. Edit: Also, bore a couple of holes in the ceiling for air. I have never seen it done, but, would use 2 or 3 inch galvanized electrical pipe with screw on end caps for when a tornado is right upon you, the vacuum wouldn't pop your ears. Provided the door is airtight.

As long as it serves its purposes, who cares what it looks like. You did it for your family and yourself. I might have more experience than in building, but I still don’t have one. Thank you for sharing.

as long as it safely works for you and serves the purpose. Yes, a dugout on the highest part of the yard with perhaps a good layer of gravel under the flooring, or french drains around the dig would help keep water from out of the structure, but great job and it will be a relief knowing you have a safe place to go to in a storm.

Mister, I have a bachelor of architecture degree and none of my design training taught me what you are wisely doing. You are design/building for the real natural world and being dutiful husband and dad. My schooling did mention Frank Lloyd Wright who always designed to respect nature- like what you have designed and built. Your design is in tune with your local weather. Another family who lives in a McMansion down the street without any investment in storm resistance could end up being a fatality. Great job 👍

Great job! The door might be a major issue though. The door should NOT be laying down on top because if something heavy landed on it, you would be trapped with no way to get out. Secondly, I would install a flashing light on the outside that blinks and states the shelter is occupied. That way, if you somehow get trapped, you could turn the flashing strobe light on to get someone's attention to help you get out. I would also keep a deep cycle battery and a solar panel mounted to trickle charge the battery so you can be sure you have power to use the flashing light, charge your phones, portable lights etc. Your storm shelter might not be the best one available but ANY kind of shelter is better than no shelter at all when there is severe weather. I been caught outside in severe weather with 75mph winds and let me tell ya, trying to run like hell to get to shelter is almost impossible! Running as fast as I could was like walking very, very slow and I almost didn't make it. I bought some land recently and this is one of the first things I'm going to have installed on my property. Really needs to be a law that every new house should have a dedicated storm shelter and every house that's already built should be able to write it off their taxes imho...... Again, you did great for it being your first time. Best regards!

Just a thought .. build a green house over it, where it will be sheltered from the rain plus you can grow some food to store in it as well as for the table . Also i have seen block structures being built and always seen steel rods put in the blocks. (maybe it's for corner strength ) . I like your shelter but as the ground around it soaks with heavy rain it will put lots more inward pressure on your walls . (Another good reason for the green house ,to keep exterior wall ground dry for less pressure ). You may want to consult a professional to see if steel rods are necessary..if you haven't already. After all you built it to keep your family safe. Thanks for the video . It has given some ideas

Great effort however putting your family in that thing is suicide. The little ½" plywood door couldn’t hold up in a tropical storm. Also the giant spaces between your blocks will leave your family scrambling for the door when the water floods you out within a few hours. Invest another $500-1000 to get a steel door and seal your bunker.

I think it would have been safer to build a shelter in a L-Shape . Flying debris normally do not make 90 degree turns. They came straight at you at 300mph. :-)) Just an idea. It also comes straight at you from 600 ft above down on your roof - so better to have 3" steel roof on top. Just my thinking as I saw in some tornado video's telephone poles at 600ft falling straight down as the storm passes.

Please dont put yourselves down! It is a good effort. Projects are always more difficult than you think. Your storm shelter looks like it will work well. Just let's all hope you never have to use it.

In 1964 my family of 10 was in a home made storm pit.it was dug out in a large bank ,it was made with just dirt floor, walls only log timber held a roof with covered dirt,It saved all our lives,we watched out the door of it as our cow went flying sad to say when it landed on the barbwire fence it was sad.but that stormpit lasted for years :-)

People for years used root cellars for shelter during storms and they survived just fine. Your is studier than theirs. I did wonder about perhaps pouring concrete over the top or putting rocks on it with dirt over it. That is about the other thing. It's still 10X better than hiding in the tub in your bathroom.
