What is this deck system you are running? I need one for my SU18. Thank you in advance!

@John-n1z7i i designed the frame specifically for this boat. I'd recommend these guys. They didn't build my frame but are very familiar with this style and have built similar frames for many of my buddies on achilles rigs. www.eddylinewelding.com/custom-raft-frames

Trying to figure out what made that trip unique, or special; I keep coming up with "nothing," unless they smoked some Maui-wowwy, mind-stop, two-hit dope around the campfire every night.

nice vide - looks like fun. as a kayaker turned cat boater/rafter, i can see the appeal of a snout rig for a trip like this. question: wouldn't it be easier to swap to a spare prop than change the motor?
@JohnSells7 ай бұрын
The prop shaft itself was bent so changing a prop would just wobble anyway... although, I have gone to just changing out the lower unit instead of swapping the whole motor. Benefit of having an identical spare motor.

is there any chance you could post a video detailing you pack up routine? eg removal of engine and floorboards, deflating and rolling up etc. i'm keen to see how it works on these boats
@JohnSells8 ай бұрын
I don't really break the boat down unless I'm doing service. The boat lives on a trailer fully rigged year round. I'll try to record my next full tear down.
@TheKetamineSquid8 ай бұрын
@@JohnSells thanks for your response. what was the decision making in regards to the purchase of an inflatable boat over, say, a rigid hull inflatable or even an aluminium boat, especially as for you, packing down doesn't seem to be a great issue? i like the look of the su-16 or the su-18 as a tender for my boat but that only works if they are able to be packed down. once again, thanks for your response.
@JohnSells8 ай бұрын
@TheKetamineSquid there are a lot of rocks in the rivers I run and any rigid hull would be subject to holes and dents. A SIB is perfect for me because in the event I tear a hole in the floor, the boat still performs. Sluggishly but I won't sink and I can get home.

how much did you pay for the boat?
@JohnSells11 ай бұрын
Complicated answer. The hull was NOS. 2 years old. The rest of the outfitting was all custom built by me and others and I didn't really keep track of the prices. Some parts I had laying around.

I enjoyed this video so much when you first posted it. Just got my first chance to run the Salt in early March, and it was as amazing as expected. My buddy and I let his 19yo son row most of it (including Pinball, Black Rocks, The Maze, Quartzite and Corkscrew)..it's amazing watching young people come into their confidence on the sticks.

Any idea how these boats run in shallow water if they're jetted?
@JohnSells Жыл бұрын
Pretty good. As long as the shallow water is smoother cobble. The underside of the boat is fabric so can be torn if run over anything jagged or sharp.

We floated low water, 2.5 cfs, in April of this year (2022), Tappan Falls had higher water than what you dealt with. We did run into rain, hail, snow and sleet the last day, we covered over 30 miles the last day so we didn't have to camp in the really cold weather, bernard landing strip to the confluence of the main Salmon River. Always enjoy watching others maneuver this great waters, thanks for filming footage.

What engine are you running? I just bought a coast guard su-16 to duck hunt and fish here in MT. How deep do you draft?
@JohnSells2 жыл бұрын
I run a 2007 mercury 50 ELPTO 2 stroke. I draft about 10" depending on how heavy I'm loaded. I carry 30 gallons on board so I'm kinda heavy in general.

WOW !! Thank you. To put that more into perspective, I have paddle a canoe the entire way. 2016 What you just covered in 26 minutes required me, an entire day. I camped near 130,, up that side canyon to the right at the end. Fourmile Canyon? Three more days to reach Halls Crossing. My concern was,, and you have greatly taught and relieved me,, was that from the North Wash boat ramp,, or Hite to Fourmile was going to be high silt banks as are the last 40 miles of the Grand down to Pierce Ferry. Those high silt banks cannot be climbed to set a campsite. And I don't care who you are , a 30 mile canoe paddle is about the limit of endurance. I have done 40 miles a couple of times,,, but,, younger, stronger, stupider,, years ago. To have a 50 mile stretch where you cannot leave your boat,, that is daunting. Thank you. A real eye opener.
