The definitive history of Tom Thomson can be found in: Klages, Gregory (2016) The Many Deaths of Tom Thomson: Separating Fact from Fiction. Dundurn Press, Toronto. 253 pp.

The story of Tom Thomson could be twisted in so many ways. It is legend at best and borders conspiracy theory. Not many sources note the passing of Peter Thomson who, in 1893, when Tom was 15 years old, was named Chief Ranger and Superintendent of the newly created Algonquin Park. Who was Peter Thomson ? He was a few years older than Tom's father John Thomson. Peter Thomson died unexpectedly in 1895ish while working in the park. He died near where Tom Thomson would meet his own end in 1917. The general source claims that the coffin carried away by Churchill of Huntsville was light and that Churchill had insisted on being alone when exhuming the remains. Was there anything in that coffin ? Did Tom Thomson die on Canoe lake or was he sent away to carry on some very secretive war related agenda ( lol ... getting carried away here ). Consider that Alison Thomson was a maternal ancestor of the Hunt and Selkirk who were the namesake of Huntsville. There is something fishy about the polite story of the Group of Seven. They were very oriented on war issues and they were connected to some of the richest people in Canada at the time. Harris was in line to inherit the Massey-Harris fortune. This topic is so full of mystery. Only fools would cover it as a face value story, but possibly only bigger fools could claim it without caveats as a conspiracy story. I am thinking that the ghost of Tom Thomson on Canoe lake is actually the ghost of Peter Thomson. lol - prove me wrong

My Name is Rob Spratt. There is a story in my family that Mr Thomson was, on occasion, would be found passed out intoxicated in the larder on a neighbouring logging camp that my great great grandfather owned and ran. On the last occasion it is said that my great great grandfather told Mr Thomson while physically removing him from the larder that if he caught him drinking his booze again, he would sink him in Canoe lake . Knowing and being one of the men in my family, it was not an idle threat. I would hate to think that but have to assume that indeed my great great grandfather killed Canada's most famous artist . I think of Tom and my great great grandfather ( and sadly now Gord) every time we perform The Tragically Hip's - Three Pistols. Peace Love & Rock n Roll

Why can't we use another method? This is a waist of water! Think about those who are dying because of dehydration.

It was only the skull that was sent to Toronto and eventually went 'missing'. His skeleton is still deep in the bush at the Canoe Lake Cemetery... I believe this is correct, though I have yet to read 'Northern Light'.

The entire skeleton was sent to Toronto for examination and later returned to Canoe Lake by the OPP. It was reburied, including the skull in the original grave site. It was stated as such in the book Northern Light.

Thanks for posting this! I've been up all night researching on Tom. Coincidentally today is the 95th anniversary of his death. I wonder if his family ever decided to do DNA testing or research his resting place in Leith. I really want to go and visit his grave site [ but where is his actual body?] I hope his family open their hearts so he can rest in peace. We all need closure to what really happened to Tom.
