Would using a file make it less necessary to cut the sidewall? Meaning will the file take away some material? I've used my Diamond Stones and have done a little bit of filing. But I think some of my skis need the sidewall cut to get a proper edge angle at this point. I'm wondering if a good file can get me there without cutting the sidewall

No a file or diamond won’t cut the sidewall. You need a specific sidewall removal tool for this otherwise you can’t get your edges sharp.

I’m a beginner. 5 days total but I’m progressing fast. I can close parallel carve and i started waxing my skis already. I’m looking at getting into tuning and I heard about you from the big picture skiing podcast and you said beginners probably won’t be looking to sharpen there edges BUT you gave the advise for beginners anyway and thank you. I’m looking at picking up everything I need from your website as soon as I can get the funds

Are you more likely to make a mistake with a file compared to a diamond Stone if you're a novice? Would you recommend one or the other for someone that's new to tuning

It’s possible yes. We recommend starting with diamond stones first because it’s easy to learn the mechanics especially because you can go both ways with diamond stones.

So basically the bigger gap within the skis put together should "sit" inside when I ski. So skis that are not made perfect that is a good rule that will make us feel more stable and in control on ski slopes. Cheers.

How often (how many days of skiing) shall we sharpen our edges with a file? I feel that after 5-6 days on cold icy conditions, my edges are becoming dull, hard to control my skis on steep terrain. Do i have to sharpen them with a file, that removes steel, or would a 200 diamond stone suffice in order to bring back the nice grip feeling that we have when getting the skis after the season service?
@sidecuttuning

when conditions are hard/icy you’ll need to use a file every time you tune followed by diamond, ceramic or elastik stones.

I am doing the maintenance on our family ski's. We do slope,freeride, touring and telemark and therefore have in total 12 pair of ski. I use mainly Toko and Swix products. I really like the Sidecut file guide with the fixation. I am doing it with a clamp. I tried to find Sidecut products in Europe but there is no seller here. I usually let the wax cool and harden over night and take it down next day. Our outdoor temperature is 0 to -5°C, hence it gets very hard to scrape. As i dont have an indoor place to do it, its all done outdoor on my terace. Do you consider this as harmful for the base? How do you scrape of the wax on a concave base? i use a 3mm plexi that is rather soft. But you did mention to use thick ones. I agree this for the flat base ski. I apply with Swix a kiss roll hot wax machine.
@sidecuttuning
@sidecuttuning 13 күн бұрын
email us for more info! it’s better to wax at room temperature if possible. For removing wax watch our tip on how to scrape but in a nutshell turn your scraper a few degrees and take 2 passes on the left side of the ski followed by the right side.

Allow me to comment on this great video. Many if not all your great videos are geared for top level racing context skiers. Yes all are great, but in the overall context few skiers are racing, In my experience ( I am past 80 ),,,serious ski racers have technicians of clubs doing tuning. Please think and produce such great video geared to 90% of skiers. So few skiers now do their own tuning. Doing the sidewall as perfectly as you suggest is NOT the concern of most skiers. I do my sidewalls as you suggest,,,but I am the only person in my ski Center to do so. Most think I am too “technical”,,,too demanding. Too old school.! Love all you videos. All are clearly prepared by knowledgeable ski technicians. In my opinion,few skiers appreciate and will follow all your precise instructions. Sanding sidewalls,,,? No concern to 90% of skiers! With great respect, Pavel

Could excessive removal of Titanal impact the ski's stiffness or cause any other side effects? I understand that Titanal's hardness might create issues when using a file or diamond stone-does this always happen, or not necessarily?

I’ve shaped hundreds of skis for the local ski academy. Slick tool, I always just used an angle grinder and free hand the panzer file. Smooth it all out with a power band file. Chemically treat the crappy volkl plastic sidewalls…nobody realizes how important it is to remove all that material especially on new race skis. The side and base bevels aren’t even consistent or true to spec out of the box. Any new ski needs a New Ski Prep. The art of ski tuning is fading away, replaced by automated box tuners. Glad to you’ve still got the love for it. 🤜🤙

Taking the sidewall off completely does change the flex of the ski but unnoticeable to most. Having said that it's a necessary step to be able to get the edges sharp. Why are new skis not flat, that's a question I've asked for 50 plus years! For what they cost all new skis should be perfectly flat. It cracks me up to see a nice race or carver ski with a 1/2 degree base bevel 3 on the side but when you put a true bar on the base it's concave so now you have to get the ski flat and start all over. What a waste.

@@spineguy444 the skis often aren't on the angles specified but again as mentioned before you need to set your skis up (tune them when they're new) to your preference which is based on your strength, skill level, what kind of snow you're on consistently.

@sidecuttuning 3 ай бұрын
It's predominantly due to cost. The tune on most new skis ranges from ok to pretty good. What most do not realize is that new skis need to be tuned and the tune if dictated by ones skill level, the ski type (i.e. carving vs. powder) and the strength of the skier. The manufacture therefore really only have one option and that's to deliver a generic tune. If up to you to maximize their potential and that's why we exist...to help teach you how to do that.
@spineguy444
@spineguy444 3 ай бұрын
@@sidecuttuning I've been a tuning guy for over 50 yrs. Since my onset the tune on new skis is the same Railed tips and tail convex under foot. As you know those findings produce a terrible ride. To say a generic tune is ok is like saying your new turbo carrera needs a tune up and alignment assuming you just bought a pair of high performance skis. Having worked shops before becoming a physician I've seen the "new ski" tune vary from a hot wax to full on tune including grinding etc. It takes a lot of time to produce a flat ski even with a grinder or stone. The side and base bevels are simple by comparison. I have an 80's Mohn Wet bet and a good friend with a machine shop. It has taken a lot of work to get the Mohn to produce a perfectly flat ski. Having a flat ski tuned the way you want with desired side bevel produce a neutral responsive ski which is what I expect when buying a high performance ski. I don't expect my high performance car to spit and sputter off the show room floor or pull to one side, under or oversteer etc.
