Thanks for your comment! I didnt like this one either, but there were different saloon layouts with different nav stations for the 46 Open. Our next boat will have a port facing nav station, but next to the saloon table, which is better for map work anyhow. Couldnt check neither the 44 nor the 48 yet. But also curious. Need to try!

Hey @Mordalo, I had the same opinion until I really started searching for the yachts and I started negotiations. Many "affordable" charter yachts, the btter ones were really expensive and in the same price range of new yachts that even come with warranty. @@Mordalo agree, also that was my original reasoning. Now we bought a yacht with an already higher hull number with already some upgrades/improvements. Mulan is being built by one of the biggest yachtbuilders in the world with bases everywhere. We agreed to have a full yacht check in Las Palmas and then again in Grenada. If something warranty related happens on the way, I send a message what is broken and they try to get the stuff to the next base again and fix it there. Before we take off, we also will do some days/weeks of sea trials. All that made me more confident, that we can try this tour with a new yacht.

Great video Jan. Why a mono cruiser should be less comfortable at anchor than a performance cruiser or racer makes little sense though. Guess you are going with the Nautitech 44. In that case its not overlapping genoa but selftacking jib right? All the best
@janwantstosail
@janwantstosail 2 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks a lot for your comment! I sailed on numerous monos and cats and I always felt much more comfortable on cats at anchor and this for multiple reasons: When waves or swell come from the side, monos tend to rock more than cats, Also on cats you have much more space to walk around, some nice trampolines to relax in. If you have a flybridge or skylounge, you have a great view up there as well. We have space to hang up and sleep in hammocks. Another benefit is, that the main living area is all up above with a good visibility all around through the anchorage. For the kids it was great to jump off the coachroof and when the sun is burning we were swimming between the hulls. Also usually cats have a shallower draft, so you can get closer to shore. In the evening, it is easy to lift up the dinghy and to lock it in place. Well, This sounds really biassed,.. I also love to be at anchor on a Mono and I also really enjoy that, so it sounds more drastic than i mean it. And we did Not go for a Nautitech, but another performance cat with aft helms. ;-) Length waterline: 44 ft, LoA: 52 ft,.. Also we have an overlapping genoa plus a huge code 0. I can't wait to hoist the sails!

Every boat is a compromise and to put a ton of people onto a boat, you automatically end up with bad ventilation and smaller cabins which again lower the value for private owners after charter. The Bali 4.6 is not eversyone's cup of tea. in my eyes it is purely a charter yacht for family holidays or a swimming party platform. And there she delivers almost like no other boat of that size.

I never had this indirect rudder feel before and after and i asume, the Lagoon 46 will be similar. Also it depends, what you want to do. For family holidays the Fly is great, for ocean crossings only with a sport top, because with the Fly the boom is really high and it is hard to put the sails back into the lazyjack. Now we are in the buying process with another yacht, which I consider having the best of those and the Nautitech 46. and as I see it for now without the downfalls of either of them. Hey Jan, one of my favorite catamarans is the Catana 50 footers (not Bali), but like this Nautitech they also have the exposed exterior dual helms which kinda kills the whole boat for me. Questions 1) One of my biggest problems is fear of someone being on a night watch and falling off the boat from the helm in those precarious positions. Do you think that's a realistic fear or am I making a mountain out of a mole hill? 2) Do you perceive any way to build durable Bimini that might make the helms more bearable? It seems like the potential for interference with sheets is pretty high unless you keep it simple (as in this Nautitech). Thanks
@janwantstosail
@janwantstosail 8 ай бұрын
Hey Matt, Thanks for your comment! To your questions: 1.) I totally share your fear and this is actually also one downside of those aft helms. (No, you don't make a mountain out of a mole hill in my eyes) I would feel much more comfortable with more boat behind me and a more protective backrest/structure, not with flimsy reiling lines, which even cover quite some distance. You feel safe towards the front, but don't look back, when big waves are rolling in! ;-) Also the movements at the aft tip of the boat are more intense then e.g. on a central helm. When discussing this topic with Excess dealers (They also have aft helms), they stated: "It is just like on normal monohulls" . May be true, but for ocean crossings on a mono, I also would prefer a center cockpit over those aft helms. The main advantage with aft helms is in my eyes, that you can see the whole crew at any time as long as they are not down in the hulls and docking can't be any easier. Yes, can see sails better and you have a better feel for the rudder, but therefore part of the view is blocked by the superstructure. 2.) Well, when sailing long distances, the autohelm does 95% of the steering (in normal situations). so you can be out of the elements in "normal" conditions anyhow. In the rain I sometimes steered from inside with the remote control. The aft helms are far apart, so you just sit on the side, where you get the shadow from the Main or from the roof. Against rain, there is no much protection with those tiny umbrellas and I don't see, how you could properly enclosure them without sacrificing boat handling. I would not want to be there in a storm, when big waves are running in though. I am still puzzled, which yacht we shall go for. Time is ticking,..

Thank You for the very thorough review. I don't think anyone buying this boat is seriously thinking of sailing upwind, this is the ultimate condo-cat and that has a lot of appeal to some people (possibly me). In the sailing yacht vs. motor yacht discussion, this is essentially a motor yacht that leans into sailing. When put in that context it becomes a lot more likeable. My biggest concern is whether you really feel like you're sailing or are you so ensconced in luxury that the joys of sailing are substantially muted and you might as well be on a motor yacht.

If you have time and you want to drift with the wind along the coast in comfort and zip a cocktail in the shade on the rooftop of your floating condo, this is the yacht for you. If your generator worked you could run AC but who wants to listen to that at anchor. We chartered the 4.4, the the household fridge runs on AC powered through the inverter and is very in efficient. The hatches (4) 2 in the forward sail lockers and 2 in the forward birth stbd and one in port head opened backwards and thus were essentially useless. I personally would not charter this boat again ever! As for sailing, it just doesn’t!

Hallo Jan, tolles Review!

Hallo Matthias, vielen Dank!

From the yachts that you presented in the Neel 52 video, all are a good choice in my eyes, every one with pros and cons though, but none would be a dealbreaker fo me. It always is a compromise. And do never listen to people, who have never sailed on those yachts! Every time before charter, I read and watch every review, but real life is different. Sail yourself for a few days, if possible!

@Kirk, thanks a lot for the quick reply! Install errors is normal, the broken sealants also were no showstoppers. Only the bulkhead was a red flag. During the whole trip I kindof felt that something was odd and not right. We reefed early and I did not feel so good, but couldnt name it until we saw the broken bulkhead back in the marina. I wish and hope that you will be fine with your yacht though. The Nautitech has many pros though! Which layout did you have? Pantry to the aft on port?

Sadly that Dragonflys even second hand and a few years old are really expensive. On the other side, few boats can generate that speed and fun. As a weekender I would go for the smaller 32 ft, which easily fits onto a trailer and costs less than half.

A really fast racer/cruiser for weekends or holiday trips with a couple plus kids or occasional guests? This one starts at around €700k, can be specked up to €1 Mio+. The smaller versions are cool too but come for a fraction of the price and can even be trailered. What do you think about this "Speedboat"?

At the BOOT 2023 in Düsseldorf I had a discussion with the sales representative for Nautitech and I was not the only one reporting the leakages. Hope, they find a sustainable solution for it. The bulkhead issue was unique (and desastrous) though. We need more reviews and comments to push the manufacturers to deliver a good quality. Attention helps for sure! Also he was happy to hear my other thoughts and the potential for improvement. The concept is not bad though in my eyes.

@@davidwebber6956 if money was no option, the choice would be much easier I would say. With our budget we still have to compromise unfortunately. As a kid I was sailing boat races and I simply dont like condomarans, which limits the choice even further. But I am an engineer myself, so there are many things I can fix or rebuild myself. So the boat must have a solid structure/good design and I can do lots of customization then. With unlimited budget I probably would go for an HH 55 or a Balance 526 ot maybe an Outremer 55. With a little more budget probably a Balance 482 or Seawind 1470. Only I still feel intreagued by the Neels, which still offer lots of bang for the buck.

Either way, the target is to start sailing and we still have 18 months to find the right boat for us! :-)

Seems like a part from the cabinetry you were impressed. Certainly from a sailing point of view. When I had a Corsair f31 it would dance quite a bit at anchor if using just the main hull. When I set up a bridal using one of the ama's centering the anchor rode between the main and the ama the boat would settle down and was fine. I really appreciated the lack of roll when anchoring in cove's with open ocean exposure. What a dream to sail. Also really liked sailing off shore being able to set a coffee and or a meal down and not worrying about it sliding off the table or deck. I love trimarans

Other obsevations, not mentioned in the video: -aft cleats are installed vertical, which makes line handling more challenging -cleats could be one size bigger at least -in-built handrails in the coachroof can be used to catch rain water -line handling through many blocks increases friction, so we hoisted the main sail from the mast -Chart plotters from B&G got extremely hot (charter manager said, this only happens, when 2 repeaters to the nain unit are used) -no password for the B&G, so I could not connect my other NMEA-2000 devices for more testing -dinghy was great, could carry the whole crew of 9 easily -cockpit has enclosures, which even extends saloon -saloon windows are sloped, so they are really confortable to lean at, when sitting on foredeck (which again makes them dirty and decreases visibility from the helm) -engine compartments are huge and well accessible -aft cabins have bigger beds then stern cabins, but stern cabins have much more cabinets available. -Reportedly the matraces were really confortable (i slept in cockpit) -cabin and head doors can fall into lock position, so there is a risk to lock you out. (But can re-enter through the walk-through-shower -my wife got less sea sick than on the Neel, but on the Neel we also had much more wind and waves. -when engins idle and engaged, they already have substantial thrust, so be careful in the marina -tacking was surprisingly easy. Just Autopilot in wind control +/-90° and wait. Boat went through the wind really well. Then re-tune to ca. 38° wind angle which makes ca. 45° effective. When tacking against the wind in tight areas, we left traveller in middle position, self tacking jib also helped. -single handed sailing is easy, even docking, especially sidewise from starboard -sail preparations are really easy on the huge and flat coachroof and with the boom on or even below waist hight -reefing was really easy with single reefing lines to the cockpit. Reefed under sails without engine smoothly -everywhee more than enough headroom for myself (1.79m, 5'11) -winch positions are great and offer multi-usage e.g. for lifting dinghi, pulling shore lines, etc. Only main halyard winch is powered, but anyhow we always operate manual. (I want to feel the resistance in order not to break anything and after all, sailing is a sport) -cockpit protection is just great, always slept there, even in rain and wind. -gas bottles are below cockpit bench and hard to reach to cut off gas supply after cooking -2nd hand yachts available for between €550k and €900k -Pitter Yachting did a great job, happy with especially their staff at site (may I tell your name here?) -Coratia seems to be a big rip off to me: mooring at national parks €85+ per night, many small national parks next to each other, so a 3 day ticket was only valid in a small area. Also almost no sea-life or land life, for what I would call it a national park. Marinas are freakingly expensive, as I investigated €190 for one night in an ACI Marina for our Yacht, although not much infrastructure. Limited anchorages, mainly expensive moorings. Also we had to pay tourist tax, etc. Biggest pros: lots of space and visibility from everywhere (but the helm) Biggest cons: poor visibility from helm, speed below expectations, quality below expectations (sealings, aft bulkhead, wall and ceiling panels comming off) Verdict: We keep on searching! 😜

We are searching for a cruising cat to sail around the world starting in November 2024. If possible between 3 and 10 years old, 4 double cabins, 44 to 55 feet, bluewater capable. Also sorry for not putting in engine bay videos, I unfortunately hat the phone on picture settings when getting in and did not start the video recording. More videos to come with other yachts, so subscribe to stay tuned

Dear Jan, I have appreciated the test of this cat and more of this the Neel 45 (I wouldl like to buy a N45 if available at a good price).From what I see in your video you have reach, roughly speaking, half the speed of real wind in term of GPS speed of Nautitech 46 Open; it is correct? Is this spoeed level get with code-0 or a gennaker or only with white sails? Thanks in advance for your reply!
@janwantstosail
@janwantstosail 2 жыл бұрын
@@Winbasis-Sail thanks a lot for the feedback! We only had both boats with the white and previously rigged sails. I opted for the Code-0 for the Neel but they refused to give it to me. Generally I feel, the Neel picked up speed with much more ease, so I also would feel more confident to sail the Neel with a Code 0 or Gennaker, since increasing wind speeds transform into boat speed immediately and I felt less pulling on the rig therefore. The Neel sailed with 90% wind speed where the Nautitech had ca. 50% wind speed. So the Neel was almost twice as fast. But also th Neel had two head sails, which also made adjustments easier. One side-note: i was not allowed to adjust the daggerboard, which was in a middle position with thr Neel so we did not reach full tagging or downwind performance. I would love to test much more! For sailing, the Neel is the absolute highlight, for space thr Nautitech offers much more.

@@janwantstosail Thanks! I suppose it was like that! In my cat after more than a year of tuning, I have reach a speed (SOG) of 70% of TWS and I was satisfy with that. But the impressive performance of Neel 45 takes my heart away! Particularly for the Neel kind of sailing, tha should be very smooth. Do you think that owner of Mizar will in next future want to sell his tri? I would like to make an offer to him. And moreover and most important, after a week with Mizar, you would buy it for yourself if it would be possible? I mean in your opinion is Mizar a good Neel 45? for what you have test and touch during your test?

Hey @WINDEX, you have a FP Lipari 41? 70% of TWS is really good then! I have no idea, if the Mizar owner wants to sell, but I think ca. 50 Neel 45 were produced, so there always should be some on the market available. The Neel 45 (also Mizar) would be a great option for me, only my wife opposes there. She wants more space and nicer woodwork. My favourite still is the Neel 51, only it might blow our budget. I may take a second view on the Neel 47 next year and then make an in depth video again. Is there a way with KZbin to send direct messages? I could forward the contact to the Mizar owner then.
