About not having a driving license: don't bother with the Azores or most small islands for that matter. It really takes away from the experience of exploring the island, and relying on someone else - a stranger even - for transport is foolish. Plenty of other places in the world to explore where a car is not needed. Learn to drive and then visit Azores to make the most of it. I've spent 6 weeks on Sao Miguel and going back for another month next year.

Maybe this isnt a beach on the Azores? But i never found white sand beaches. Only black sand.

I'm tired of the locals complaining about money. I've been trying to find someone to maintain my yard year round and nobody wants to do it. I'm offering to pay them well so how hard up can they be?

Hi there!! What’s your recommendation on seeing San Miguel? We are cruising into Porto Delgado in May. We’d like to see all the highlights but we don’t know if we should go w a 4 wheel drive tour or just hire a taxi. What’s your advice?

Alcoholism and drug issues have been there for hundreds of years. The area of Rabo de Peixe being a fishing and farming town is more prone prior to the incident having people who worked hard and played hard liked to use and abuse alcohol and drugs long before the cocaine washed up on shore! It did accelerate the addiction issues no doubt when the cocaine washed up. The area of Riberia Grande has some of the worst drug/drink related crime rates in Portugal according to a Police Officer at Rabo de Peixe just last month, and on the eye I can see the are quite a few issues on when I paid a visit to this area 3 times, including on the worst street but compared to some areas where I live its not that bad Any island is generally more prone to these issues (including the bigger ones like the UK and Ireland!), but with the Azores being that bit more remote makes it that little bit worst than Madeira for example. Interested to know your view on any poverty you saw on the smaller islands, and any drink/drug related issues?

As a sugar addict, I know this stemmed to my alcoholism, and to be honest I can see a world heavily addicted to sugar and ultra high processed foods. Food addiction is very cunning not only on the mind, sugar is hidden in over 50 different names in labelling in the UK for example, and sugar in all EU countries and the UK NEVER gets typed in bold, yet it is one of the main causes of health issues. Try to abstain completely from sugar, sweetener and things like honey for a month, only relying on natural sugar from fruit and other food sources. I found even cranberry juice has sweetener. Eating in the shopping mall in Ponto Delgada and my choices were very limited to one dish, steak and fries! Taco Bell couldn't even give me the ingredients of there fillings. Lots of fruit juices contain added sugar in Portugal when they portray themselves as fresh, have a look at the full range of Pingo Doce if you ever get time, you may be surprised to see that around half the range has added sugar.

Hello, I'm from Lisbon but I live in the Azores since 1997. Let me just add some information. If you want to visit Corvo, you can fly (with some stops, not directly) or you can take the big ferry to Flores and then a small boat to Corvo (I did this once, they even stopped so we could swim with the dolphins). The large ferry (Atlanticoline) only operates during spring and summer, due to rough sea conditions. Cockroaches are a pest, especially in summer. However, if your BNB has been pulverized, they will usually appear almost dead and upside down. Expect to find them on the streets after sunset. Avoid sitting in public places (such as walls or doorsteps). On the terraces, keep your eyes open. They can climb up your legs. They fly too. About the weather: a good summer is not a certainty, bad weather in other months of the year is the most likely outcome. It rains a lot, with several strong storms throughout the year. Now, about the natives of São Miguel (“Micaelenses”): if you are planning to move to this particular island, most of your new friends will probably be foreigners or Portuguese from the mainland. The “Micaelenses”, despite seeming warm people, are very reserved. Furthermore, if we move a little away from the big cities, like Ponta Delgada or Ribeira Grande, the culture and average education of the natives decreases exponentially and we can expect many drug addicts. Moving around: forget public transports or hitchiking. Rent a car or use taxis. To conclude, the restoration in the Azores has always been terrible. Many restaurant and bar owners still think they are doing their customers a favor. However, due to the huge growth in tourism in recent years, they are improving a little.

Faial is my favourite Azorean island. The volcano museum is fascinating and the tiny museum showing a typical house and how they used to live including arts & crafts (who knew you could craft with fish scales) & dragon tree leaf dolls. The beach at Praia do Norte is an amazing place to watch waves crashing in - I could have spent days just watching them.

Horta is a lovely, quiet town. Last year we spent over a week there. The island is beautiful. The view of Pico is captivating..... We hope to live there for retirement 😄

ok it does feel cold in the winter time. wet cold is colder than dry cold. it is semi.... semi semi tropical not tropical so do not expect Hawaii.... hmmmmmm that is why i moved to Hawaii . now that is pleasantly tropical not cold not hot just pleasant. but i spent 2 years on Terceira and it was magical. but you are on a island and many people cannot deal with island life. yes humidity leads to mold and cold is cold in the day time in winter it is not Alaska but it is not Hawaii.

"mama" hotel 2. my casa es tu casa 3. principe leopoldo, in lugano switzerland. the landscape is very nice, "the hotel" doesn't look like a hotel & everything was perfect, as a hotel the best. 4. swissôtel istanbul, also a nice landscape from the inside of the hotel (lobby) & also everything was perfect. 5.- ...all hotels in south america, like in fernando de noronha in brasil, bacalar mexico, providencia colombia & some more... 🌻🤚👋🤚👋

A Portuguese Barbeque is so so good! We would have a clam boil and it would be boiled in a pit. The food and the good times and wine we would enjoy life while we have it. A good portion of my family is deceased now. My daughter comes on special days with the kids and we all make a pit. We have chourico, boiled clams, potatoes, and more. It brought back memories long ago. Those were the days.
