Boss: Get down in there and fix it up. Me: Pushes boss down in there instead.... and just like that, suddenly I'M the dick.

I had a boss who blew off the most basic safety procedures and PPE…after a very short time as the “new guy”, I started to stand up for myself and say, “We’ve gotta do it this way (the safe way)” and he would say, “Why?”…knowing that logic and proper procedures meant nothing to him but $$$ did, I would say, “Because OSHA says so and we’re looking at some nice fines if we don’t”. He never really changed, but at least he stayed out of my way when I wanted to do things the right, safe way.

Why are the auditors wearing hard hats but the actual workers are not....?

To be an OSHA inspector it should be legal you have to work blue collar trades for 5 years before. They have no concept of how and what to do the job cause they have never physically done the labor. Osha people and super interdental are the most hated people on constructions site cause they don't do anything.
21 ft and loose backfill surrounding the trench. Stupid is as stupid does. As an engineer I've walked up on highway sites where there are no signs up, excavators already in the road, excavators peeling up dirt right next to electrical transmission poles, and I have to start screaming for anyone to take me seriously.

Cave-ins can happen WITH shoring. The guy should have known better than to be down there. Also, OSHA guy should have immediately demanded they get him out before asking a single question.

Thank you! People need to hear this so they understand the history of things and gain some appreciation for the current protection of workers. When I was a kid it was common to see men missing limbs and appendages because they lost them on the job all the time with no recourse in previous generations.
