I made five cloaks for various recipients for Christmas, & I learned a lot about working with velvet & satin. Mostly I learned that my previous pinning techniques were woefully inadequate for this fabric combination. Out of desperation, I resorted to pinning about every 3/8". Overkill? Yes. Worked? Also yes. The recipients & all of the parental units were shocked, awed, & amazed, so that was nice.

Love the dressing ❤. But Catherine wasn't Marie's grandaunt - they were distant cousins by blood, whilst Catherine's granddaughter was married to Marie's uncle. Further, Henry II wasn't Henry IV's grandfather, but first cousin to his mother (Jeanne III of Navarre), and a more distant cousin in the male-line (aside from the whole father in-law thing).

Your advices are very helpful and motivating. I would also recommend having a good seam allowance (mine is 1 cm) as velvet frays so much and using a walking foot for sewing 🪡 🧵😄

You can use a twin needle. Baste the stich first, and use a smaller size 8 or 10 needle.

It's so crazy to me that women just wore deadly makeup on their faces for GENERATIONS. Longer than that! Like .. ancient civilizations had more know-how and inventions than we normally give them credit for. How on earth did those ancient people, who had everyone from mathematicians to philosophers to architects that would beat any modern human, how on earth did they not know something they applied to their face everyday was toxic?! You'd think there'd be signs!!! It really baffles me😂

Came across your video. I'm looking into these boots as well. How are they holding up? Have you come across any other company's since this video you would recommend?
@CostumeTrek

We have not looked any any other companies boots. We would still recommend these as good quality introductory level boots. It's been a while since we've been on their website, so unless they've added half sizes, get the next full size larger! Other than that, they're pretty good boots for someone on a budget and will give you a decent life expectancy.

i'm considering making a foam wig and have watched several videos about it. this is the only one that i've seen suggest buckram for the wig base (most others use thin craft foam). which method do you think is the best?
@CostumeTrek
@CostumeTrek 10 ай бұрын
Either will work. I find buckram to be more stable. It is less likely to stretch out weirdly. That's why we chose to use it.

Is this how elaborately Mary Queen of Scots would have been dressed to her execution? I want to know everything she took with her, every single article of clothing.

Probably not. She is known to have worn some kind of outer clothing which was removed before her execution, but we (CostumeTrek) aren't aware of any details as to what it was. If you find out, let us know!

In an era when bathing was not " à la mode " it must have been very unhygienic and wearing so much clothing meant always being dependent on maids to get the misstress out of them !
@CostumeTrek
@CostumeTrek Жыл бұрын
While personal bathing may have been scarce for the masses, the higher up classes did bathe somewhat more frequently than we think and they often bathed in their underwear. Their clothing, especially undergarments; were laundered fairly regularly.
@donsarde

@@CostumeTrek But even the upper classes only bathed once a week up until the late 18th century.

How do you sew contour darts on velvet?
@CostumeTrek
@CostumeTrek Жыл бұрын
Essentially the same way as you would with any other fabric, but with more pins...and bad words! Another option is to hand baste it first, then machine sew, skipping the pins. Good luck!

Thank you for this video! I'd like to take an old blazer, cut the blazer into the cat pattern I have and sew it onto 100% quilt cotton, quilted bag to use during October. Do you have any suggestions on the best way to go about this and what type of needle and thread do you recommend? Thank you!
@CostumeTrek
@CostumeTrek Жыл бұрын
There are a few ways to do this. I would start by cutting out the pattern a bit larger than the cat, hand tuck the edges in as it is pinned onto your cotton (use lots of pins) . Then hand stitch it down to hold in in place with a zigzag stitch over the edge of the folded fabric so you don't have raw edges. As you go the velvet will want to wiggle around so you may be constantly readjusting it. You may want to consider doing some stitching on top of the cat design to help hold it in place and give it a quilted appearance. If you do that start from the center and work your way to the edges. After you stitch the edges to hold it in place you may want to go over the edges again with a tighter stitch (this could be done by machine) to create a cleaner edge. There will be swearing, but persevere this project will be lovely and super cool when done! Good luck and post photos when you are done, I'd love to see the finished project!

@CostumeTrek thank you much!! I'm so new to sewing (couple months in) so I'm probably getting in way over my head, but I'm determined to have a soft touchy cat vs a boring quilt cotton cat!
