My problem with this guy was that secondary attack he would sometimes do after you Mikiri counter him. Once I learned to be ready to deflect that I was able to beat him.

The biggest suggestion i could give you is that holding the block button is the most unhelpful thing you can do. Deflection is practically instantaneous and allows you to always be ready to respond even when standing still, in fact the game encourages the player to do just that. To always be ready, keep an eye on the enemy's arm holding the weapon. Bosses always have animations that telegraph when the attack will hit, always having a preparation phase that warns you that an attack is coming, followed by a quick change in movement that announces the release phase and tells you that it's time to deflect. Sekiro is all about rhythm and reading enemies, and once you get into the mechanics it will come naturally to you. last piece of advice I feel like giving you is to take the pendant that the old lady gives you to the Buddha of the first sculptor before proceeding beyond Gyobu, because in Ashina there will be someone who will make you learn the game without giving you the possibility of holding down the block. And remember, hesitation is defeat.
