I get the added cost associated to keep quality shipwrights trained and the importance of maintaining a indigenous ship program. But when it comes to ships, quantity has a quality all its own. A two ship class is just bad Government Beancounter decision making from the start. 1 Billion spent on designing a ship that was already NATO designed and active in another navy is just incredible You have technically a three ocean navy with two fleets. Two ships give you no backup. The Asterix doesn't count, especially when you insisted it couldn't go into combat zones because it was a commercial design? Which is total BS, used as an excuse not to purchase it outright or allow Davie to build the other three hulls. Please lets go back to calling this an glorified small AOR and not a real JSS. The JSS was supposed to get the Army and its equipment where it needed to be in a short order. We could have bought two Mistral class LDH for peanuts off the French and screwed over Russia over 15 years ago. I hope the first government department eliminated by PP is Public Works procurement

Boats for the Navy? Fantastic! Yet another thing that got done under the Liberal government. Great Job!!!! Here in Alberta we have a brand spanking new pipeline. BC has natural gas shipping ports that are almost up and running. Bombardier stock is close to the highest price it's been in over 20 years. All this has happened after the disastrous Conservative government's and in spite of a global pandemic. RIGHT ON CANADA!!!! THANK YOU TRUDEAU!❤

Why Doesn’t Canada’s Navy Have Nuclear-Powered Vessels? As a nation with the world’s longest coastline and a rapidly changing Arctic, it’s puzzling that Canada’s navy doesn’t include nuclear-powered vessels. This is especially surprising given the strategic importance of the Arctic in defense, shipping, and resource exploration. Nuclear-powered submarines and icebreakers offer unmatched advantages in the harsh Arctic environment. They can operate under thick ice, stay submerged for months, and travel vast distances without refueling. Compare this to diesel-electric vessels, which are limited in range and require frequent refueling-a logistical nightmare in remote, icy waters. Countries like the U.S., Russia, and China understand the value of nuclear-powered fleets, and they’re investing heavily to dominate the Arctic. Canada, on the other hand, relies on diesel-electric submarines and conventionally powered surface vessels, which are ill-equipped for sustained Arctic operations. As the polar ice melts and global powers vie for control of this resource-rich region, Canada’s lack of nuclear-powered vessels feels like a glaring oversight. For a nation with such a vast Arctic presence, shouldn’t we lead by example and invest in a navy capable of protecting it? This isn’t just about national defense-it’s about securing our future in one of the most critical geopolitical arenas of the 21st century. 🇨🇦
@johnarnold8933 күн бұрын
Sure Bubba, we can raise your taxes up a bunch to pay for all that.
@Nathangoss0073 күн бұрын
@ Hey “bubba” taxes don’t necessarily have to be raised to implement nuclear-powered ships because their high upfront costs can be offset through long-term savings and strategic budgeting. Over time, nuclear ships reduce operational expenses by eliminating frequent fuel purchases and refueling logistics, which can significantly lower lifetime costs. Additionally, governments or organizations can reallocate existing budgets, secure private-sector partnerships, or use financing mechanisms to cover initial costs without increasing taxes. Savings from reduced fuel imports and enhanced efficiency can also help balance initial expenditures. Therefore, with proper planning and cost management, raising taxes is not a requirement for adopting nuclear-powered ships.
@lloydkuepfer15992 күн бұрын
Because of cost. You can get 12 diesel subs at same price as 3 nuclear powered ones. I would rather have 12

Right nearby, so I've seen this ship getting worked on for months already. (Much to the chagrin of the "Shipyards" residential project nearby, who discovered after purchasing that the area does actually host a shipyard.) It always just seems like they are there forever, but the work does get done and then something else replaces it in the same space. At 0:50, you can see next to it one of the BC Ferries (being worked on too/next?). To the immediate east of this yard, past those trains is a huge grain elevator facility. About 2-3 km west of this facility is the other Seaspan one in North Vancouver, where they just did a naming & launch of some other Canadian Coast guard vessel Naalak Nappaaluk, and they also do navy projects there too.

We made ships both merchant and warships in a few months in WW2, and didn’t have the technology back then like we have today.

Get he rag out out out of your ass Canadian ship builders. Why does it take you so long to build anything, while China Korea and Germany can turn out building ships like sausages. Next time contract it out to the Germans or Koreans, they build better ships in a faster time for much less than these entitled Canadian-ship builders who are always over budget and behind schedule who do sub standard work and are doing nothing but wasting government money and milking that government cash cow . If BC ferries would not build a ship in Canadian shipyards because of the poor quality and behind schedule and over budget like the fast catamaran ferries in the 19990’s and would sooner get ships built in Romania , you know their is a problem with Canadian shipyards. But then Canadian businesses are no longer good at quality and innovation and technology, like Europeans , Koreans or Japanese .
