Did you ever try the rubber charging handle cover that AK thumb grips offers? It looks like you could just DIY it from a hardware store.

Great informative vid! I have never liked the polymer stuff on the AK's until I saw yours. I just ordered the magpul furniture for my Zpap92 in FDE! Do you have any newer tips on modifying the furniture with a dremel? I will be attempting to do mine this week! Thanks for making these videos!

The first video I have seen on your channel. I like what you did to the rifle (not a big fan of Zhukov, though) - it is practical without being too "tacticool". I am curious about the extended mag release: you mentioned Carolina Shooters as the supplier and couldn't find the exact one that is on your rifle on their website. The one on the rifle looks thicker (almost molded plastic) than just the bent sheet metal one they sell. Didi you somehow modify it? Granted, this video is 4 years old so it might be something they no longer carry in stock... Anyway, I'd be curious to know what exact one you have.

I realize this video is old, but I just saw it and wanted to add some information. No offense intended, as you seem as though you are pretty well educated in firearms and handloading. But there is some incorrect information in this video. First, the 7.62x39 and the 300AAC are not ballistically equivalent. They are close, but they are not the same - at all. AAC was looking for similar performance to the x39 out of AR platforms, yes. But that was only one consideration. While under development, one of the PRIMARY applications looked at was the need for subsonic 30cal performance to be used in suppressed weapons by SOCOM - something that US Special Operations had been asking for during the war in Iraq. What was ultimately settled on was a cartridge that provided similar performance when used with light bullets, but was a vastly different beast. The x39 has an maximum pressure of 54,490PSI, the 300AAC having 55,565PSI. This is similar but, importantly, with a lower case capacity - 35.2gr H20 vs 25gr H20. This dramatically affects the performance of a given loading. Even though they are ballistically similar when looking at light loadings, they are vastly different when looking at safe loadings. If we were to load correctly sized Lyman 311359 bullets (120gr Spire Point) with the same charge of say Ramshot X-Term (random powder used as a comparison because of it's similarity to most powders for intermediate cartridges) at 24gr we would see in any ballistics software that the 300AAC would generate nearly 36k PSI of pressure at 2300fps, while the x39 would only generate 13.6k PSI at a velocity of 1700fps. To achieve the same performance with the x39 with that particular powder you would need to load it with approximately 31gr of Ramshot X-Term yielding 2290fps in simulation with a similar pressure of 34k PSI. If simulating with CFE-BLK we see similar variances with lower charge weights. What this translates to when considernig loadings for subsonic performance is a higher probability of lower pressures not being enough to exit the bullet from the bore when using 300AAC loads in the x39 case. This is a huge safety concern for the obvious reasons. Though, that is not to say a safe loading cannot be found using 300AAC data. Only that when looking at heavy/slow loadings there is a greater risk where it concerns stuck bullets. As I do not have any information on the particular bullets you reference, I had to use a similar weight cast profile with the same charge - and this shows a safe loading at approximately 1044fps at 12k PSI. Whether this is enough to cycle the action on an AK or SKS is up in the air - as they this can vary from rifle to rifle. And whether this is a high enough pressure to reliably exit the bullet from the bore of the rifle is unknown. But it is a very low pressure for a rifle cartridge. Where it concerns leading, this is most likely caused by your bullet size selection. In short, there are multiple bore diameters for rifles in 7.62x39. Many US made rifles for the x39 use .308 barrels. European rifles, to include AKs, generally have barrels with diameters of .310 to .312. Some rifles have been shown to have barrels of .316. This is a HUGELY important consideration. Because cast bullits need to be sized .001 to .003 over bore diameter for proper fit - the firing of the round causes the bullet to be sized to it's final dimensions by the barrel. You do not select bullets the same diameter as your bore - which you seem to have done according to what you've told us. If you're getting leading, there are generally three main causes: bullet size is too small, velocity is too great, or not enough lube (not generally a concern for hitek or powder coated bullets). Since you're firing subsonic loads, this leads me to believe you're shooting bullets too small for your bore, and should find some cast boolits sized .311 to .312 to try, you might even need a larger diameter. Again, this depends on the individual gun in question. You can determine this by either slugging your bore, or doing a chamber casting to include your grooves and lands. I generally get no leading in pistol or rifle loads when using properly sized bullets at or below 2000fps (the generally accepted threshold for most cast boolits). If you're interested in using cast, I would highly suggest you visit and join the Cast Boolits Forum. There is more knowledge on that one website where it concerns reloading than probably anywhere else on the web.

Brilliant! Thank you for actually having useful information... Now you just need to get the QD inserts for QD slings on the damn Z stock I have the large one on my C39 V2(quit hating... Just upgrade it😁) With that, the stock and a Kalashnikov (CMC) trigger it is stellar! Also the tapco trigger that was in it was great but the new one from K and CMC is bad ass! I'm also now a subscriber! You rock man.... You remind me of all of us dyslexics that always look for the simplicity in modding or building something!
