I may not know squat about editing, but I know foaming. The “Train Hub” guy is one of the super Foamers that makes the railfan community look like a bunch of psych ward escapees. But, for the sake of displaying my foamerism on the public domain, the locomotive was a retired Great Northern passenger locomotive. Specifically, a General Motors Electric-Motive Division F8A. The horn sounded like a Nathan Airchime M3, which was commonly used by EMD on Bulldog Nose locomotives, placed on there as part of the build process, preceding delivery to the purchaser(railroad). The Great Northern ordered a number of F8A’s and F8B’s for various purposes, from freight to passenger service. F units sported two configurations. The A Unit with its aerodynamic Covered Wagon Cab appearance, and the B Unit, which had no cab or nose and was controlled by inputs made by the engineer in the lead cab unit. The F-A’s would be positioned one as the Lead Power, followed by one or more B Units, and finally one more A unit as the last trailing unit with the cab facing opposite the direction of travel. Railroads were fond of this unit due to its cutting edge prime mover, aerodynamic streamlined design, and modular nature of the A-B-A configuration. The F-A’s and F-B’s sported Bloomberg B-B traction motors and transmissions in 2 Axel Trucks. Later on, the more powerful E Units replaced the F Unit, sporting a nearly identical appearance, with the only noticeable difference at distance being the 3 Axel Trucks that replaced the Bloomberg B’s, and the extended Long Hood to accommodate the more powerful Prime Mover and larger Electric Generator. The aerodynamic yet utilitarian design made the F Units, and later E Units a favorite for railroads in across the United States. GM’s EMD sold more than 7,000.x F Units in both configurations, and later went on to be one of the top international manufacturers of Diesel Electric Locomotives. With later even more successful models like the GP Series, SD Series, SW Series and MP Series locomotives, EMD outclasses the competition with a nearly hundred year history of producing reliable and efficient locomotives, only rivaled by General Electric. Their current super successful model is the SD70 in the ACe prime mover configuration. In my personal opinion, if the Bulldog Nose locomotives weren’t as successful as they were, then EMD may not be what it is today, and General Motors may have even scrapped EMD altogether. But, the F Unit in the video is the retired Great Northern F-8A No. 1246, and is in preservation at the Northwest Railway Museum and for a time made frequent excursions for the museum. You can still see it on Static Display at the museum in Snoqualmie Washington.
