Hi there, I would consider starting with aluminum. It's an excellent metal to start with, too get the feel of things. I would not run wood in your lathe. I'll look for some safety videos for you. For now, always remember to wear your safety glasses. No long sleeves around your lathe. No jewelry. No aprons. Nothing that can get caught in the lathe. Always examine your lathe before turning it on. Make sure the your work is secure in the chuck. As for your first cuts, go in slowly. Make gentle contact with the spinning part until you get the hang of things. Give your lathe your complete attention, no distractions while running your lathe. You must concentrate while performing any operation on your lathe. Know what everything does on your lathe to further expand your use of it. I wish you the very best with your new lathe. I will find some safety videos for you. I'm really proud of you for wanting to use it safely. Sincerely Robert

Please do not turn the chuck at high speed with nothing in it's jaws. The Jaws could fly out and injure you or someone else. Nice video. Congratulations on your new lathe. Sincerely Robert

Thanks for the info. Do you have suggestions on where I can find some good resources for getting into it and doing it safely? My dad is helping me here and there, but he probably doesn’t abide by the safe practices that exist.. Should I start working with wooden dowels before brass/bronze metals?

So you know if they still make shingles? We need shingles for a bump out/shed on the side of our house, and I guess they are hard to find - and we're nearby to Harwinton!
@JaredDunbarАй бұрын
We did run the shingle mill again this year as an educational demonstration but the Harwinton Agricultural Society doesn’t make shingles for sale because it puts a lot of wear on the machine which is over 150 years old.

Love that slow speed performance. Let me guess: You're building a 16-unit EMU passenger train to beat both the lap and weight records at Train Mountain.
@JaredDunbar5 ай бұрын
Hahaha.. naw just an EMD SW1 locomotive. I do not think people have made electric versions of this before simply because the motors and gearboxes are hard to fit into this size compared to the more common hydrostatic pump motors.

If that's all LGB, you could probably have kept operating. I think there's a flowing lava exception to the warranty, but not much else even slows it down.

The track is not quite in gauge in some places. In others, this car comes off if the track has too severe a twist for it to navigate

I have two questions 1. Why did the motors speed up when the meter was activated? 2. My Electrical Age installation crashes when I try to power the generator. And I get in the output log (Exception in server tick loop, my minecraft is 1.7.10, and it also says java.lang.NoSuchMethodError)

The meter acts like a switch; when it isn’t measuring it doesn’t allow current to flow

Hi Jared, thank you for this nice video. I have a personal similar ongoing project but with a much bigger VFD, your project is interesting and I would like to see your approach. unfortunately, the 3 links for the source code on your main comment are not working. anyway to get an update on those link? Thank you Jared
@JaredDunbar7 ай бұрын
I’m currently in a bit of a transitional period and my server is offline as a result; I’ve been looking at different motors and driver boards and the biggest issue is finding high quality VFD drivers that support engine braking via a similar interface to the Syren50. I’ve considered using the sorts of motors and drivers that FIRST robotics uses but my concern is that I’d rather use a higher voltage than 12 volts to reduce the current and heat loss.

What type of rails profile do you use?

Aaron’s track has 3 different profiles, one of the strongest ones being Culp rail. It’s similar to scaled down 115 RE

We did a pass with the leaf blower before raking; it didn’t make the cut in this video. A lot of sticks and leaves were in the stones so it was better to rake

I’d say that a lot of the container trains I’ve done video on in the past are predominantly containers only but I’m not sure.

Good to see you Jared. Now you have to test them in real cold, heat, with contaminants like oil, creosote. In rail crossing with real cars weight passing on....... Since i´m a neanderthal with those technology, can you test with different plastics ? Can old one been melted and reused ? Of course without copyright anybody can copy. But isn´t it a hobby with sharing knowledges and try ? There is already metal and plastic molded ones on the market. Are yours more economical ? Would you like to produce thousands of them ? So many many questions..... Good work and hope for the best ! Cheers 😊
@JaredDunbar9 ай бұрын
Hey, yeah, happy to talk about it. It’s mostly an experiment. The plastic I’m using is about the most robust material that is available to me as far as plastic is concerned and is unlikely to be short lived if done properly. Metal ones would probably be the next step. Old ones probably could be recycled if you really wanted to, but any impurities in the plastic would need to be removed in that process. I would not say that the way I’m making them on the printer is any cheaper than if a mold was used. It’s more frustrating if anything. I did try two different plastics but there are only so many options for this printer that are suitable for this sort of use. Many plastics available do have strength tests available to read about.

Yeah, the Amazon seller marketed them as LED lights but they certainly were NOT LED lights.
@BenjaminEsposti9 ай бұрын
@@JaredDunbar Sigh. Amazon is slowly becoming like ebay and other sites, selling fake/cheapo stuff. They removed the ability to ask questions about products, and the comments are all from different listings, making them irrelevant/misleading.

About 14 seconds for one shingle, so that's about 2000 in 8 hours - not counting the time to swap in a new wood block.
@JaredDunbar9 ай бұрын
They would have probably used it at a higher speed than we do at the fair if it was from overhead belt in a factory (a hit and miss engine runs slower). Material is donated so it’s more important to show the process than produce the result. If you operated this in production today you would not be able to run it for 8 hours at a time without hearing protection because it generates over 100 dB of sound level, which is above OSHA limits.
@BenjaminEsposti9 ай бұрын
Very nice, I like how you reproduced the incandescent light fade-out effect.
@JaredDunbar9 ай бұрын
It’s probably just incidental from the capacitance of the bulbs. I didn’t do anything particularly special there. Maybe the use of a relay makes it behave differently from if I used solid state controls though?
@BenjaminEsposti9 ай бұрын
@@JaredDunbar Yeah, if it's using a buck converter or any switch-mode regulator, it'll have a capacitor. I doubt the relay will make a difference, but if you use a solid state switch/relay and attempt to dim it using PWM, the switching regulator and/or relay might not be happy.

Calling it "End of train" might be bad juju. Especially on MLBK, call it the "Anti-crash device" instead 😁 What is that, like an ESP32 or something?

It has a tiny board from Dfrobot that has a lithium battery charger onboard which makes it easier to operate. I’m not sure what processor it was but it’s not WiFi capable unfortunately.
