If you are going to add more seaweeds, then consider doing it in over the deep ocean. Why? Any biological material on shallow seafloor emits methane that can seep to the atmosphere. If your farms are mostly in deeper seas, then the methane is diffused to the sea and consumed by the bacteria. Shallow seas these effects does not have enough time to act. By doing this you create a carbon sink that keeps taking carbon out from the atmosphere. There are also some reports from this year that are indicating ocean to be too hot for seaweeds and the seaweeds are dying.

Great information and initiative. We need regulations ASAP on wild harvesting of all types, especially on beaches. Here in Newfoundland & Labrador there are currently no regulations for harvesting, and local start-ups have been trying to access the local beach in our community to control the storm-cast material that washes up regularly.

A very clear presentation that effectively put the complexity of air-water carbon equilibrium on the table but also points to other potential carbon benefits from seaweeds

Thank you Catriona Hurd and Global Seaweed Coalition team! Very important and Informative discussion. Catriona is absolutely right - need to be honest and accurate about ability of seaweed to sequester carbon.

Very good overview of the potential and barriers to scale up seaweed - the case is very clear - we need to focus on these kind of nature based solutions to tackle a number of the SDG's.
