Feel free to check out the renshinkan karate playlist composed by Atte Kukkula here, to get a more comprensive picture. @@dakentaijutsu2010 I wouldn't celebrate yet if I were you. Kyokushin does have a rough, respectable nature to it, but it offers realistic combat just as much as point fighting. There are limitations, some of which won't be there in a real fight. When it comes to realistic combat, you'll only get that by fighting on the streets.

from Detroit.are only reverse punches allowed. ?and why so the stop the match at every point.? this is not realistic fighting and if its full contact wheres the power?
@Jaska1247 жыл бұрын
No, pretty much every technique that falls under the scoring criteria are allowed. If you'd look closely, there are way more techniques here and in part 2 receiving a point: 2:42 the jab for an example. And you can clearly see the players attempting other kinds of strikes such as the spinning back fist, that is used to score in the part 2 video. Why the bout is always stopped during a crucial exchange, could be to simulate how a fight would also pause when someone gets hit real hard. Point fighting is by default fighting for points, so someone scoring a point should also be made clear to everyone, the judges and the contestants. Stopping the fight is a convenient way to clearly tell the fighters how the bout is going, do they score or are they doing something illegal. The scoring technique must be a clear as a day- one, so if the fighting isn't stopped at a clear hit, it'll just become a non-stop mess of dozens of scoring attempts that nobody wants to watch. So it's also done to pace the fighting to be cleaner. Of course there are variations of point fighting like olympic taekwondo, where the scores are awarded without stopping the fight. In Renshinkan, the fights are "Ippon Shobu", meaning that two clear hits or a single decisive one, like a KO result in victory. We want those points to be as pure as possible, and that can't be done without pausing the fight. One criteria for scoring is "Zanshin" - awareness/focus. Your technique has zanshin when you have your eye on the opponent before you punch them in the face, during punching them in the face, and retracting your technique and retreating to a safe distance after punching them in the face. If the fighting isn't stopped at any point, the guy getting hit can just keep rushing forward after getting hit thanks to the protective gear, which once again, isn't the way to go. And if 3:19 - 3:48 techniques don't have enough "power" for you, I don't know what techniques would be enough. Sure, it's full contact, but the main focus in bogu kumite is to safely test your techniques against the opponent without hurting them, not super-realistic fighting. It's not about hurting your opponent, but besting them in terms of speed, wits and technique. The protection worn is there to allow harder contact. If being realistic is important to you, then in my opinion no martial arts competition today can be purely realistic, not even MMA. A realistic fight is a real street fight, and karate is not about that.

I can't speak on behalf of RenshinJake124, as he is obviously way more experienced in this particular style but I can tell you that if you're looking for a more effective, self-defense oriented style of Karate, your keyword is Okinawan Karate. Shorinji-ryu is deeply rooted in the traditional Okinawan way, so I can recommend joining a dojo.

WHy are they sparring with open hands?
@Jaska124 Жыл бұрын
@@SamperorIs that a bad thing in your opinion? They do close their hands when they're actually striking or else in a "situation". This applies to other karate styles as well. See, in order to understand karate sparring you must recognize how distance affects everything. Because of the way Japan forced karate to become a striking art, the overexaggerated moves also made the sparring distance artificially long. Because of the long distance, karate sparring can be segmented into two parts: non-situation and a situation. Non-situation is when the distance between fighters is so big that neither can actually threaten the other with serious attacks par from outrageous long range attacks like risky flying kicks. That's when you can afford to keep your hands low and open, because there's no immediate threat. A "situation" on the other hand is when the fighters close the distance enough, that both are threatened, and anything can happen. That's usually when a karateka attacks, feints or tries to goad the opponent into attacking. What happens next is part of the situation. In renshinkan kumite, the psychological part is very significant. You'll see fighters enter the "situation" distance pretending to be nonchalant, with their hands low and open for example. The goal is to trick the opponent to attack and counter with devastating effect. If you want credentials, I placed second in this style's japanese championship in 2019. On the way to the finals, I beat the guy who fought and lost in this video, the second match shown.

It's a good way of actually bashing each other full power without broken noses, black eyes, or all the other joys of full contact. So you train to follow through on all your strikes, but don't get murdered while doing so. Great for people who are not career fighters, which is like 99% of us.
WOW about time i see this. I was a black belt in this style 40yrs ago in SF ca. We were all about power we used to spar in Kendo gear. It is nice to see our style become wide spread.

@koi891 The power to ruthlessly kill your opponent isn't what Shorinji-Ryu Renshinkan represents. Note: Karate-Do is more like a way of life, Karate-Jutsu is more like you're after. This is a tournament, it's bound to look like a sport. There's alot more to this style than it seems.
@Jaska12413 жыл бұрын
@koi891 Does this seem like it to you? In this tournament, many fighters used the traditional moves of our style successfully. The traditions and techniques aren't going anywhere (even though this style has experienced some changes recently.). The matches may seem clumsy, but let me tell you, Japanese fighters are really fast on that scale!
