I record using Reaper, and first mix in mono..Mixing in mono first, then moving to stereo, offers several advantages: Mono mixing forces you to focus on the balance of levels between instruments without relying on stereo separation. This ensures that each element of the mix has its proper place in terms of volume and tonal balance. By achieving a clear and balanced mix in mono, you avoid frequency masking, where certain instruments can overshadow or "hide" others..Mixing in mono helps you identify and resolve frequency clashes between instruments. For example, the bass guitar and kick drum often occupy similar frequencies, and mono mixing forces you to ensure they are distinct...Once you switch to stereo after achieving a solid mono mix, panning decisions become more impactful. You’re adding stereo width to an already cohesive and balanced mix, enhancing the listening experience..

Yes, @thouston0 in the recording and mixing world a lot of engineers start the mixing process in mono, at least at the beginning of the mixing process, as it provides great advantages when balancing levels between instruments. There's also great plugins like Brainworx bx_digital V3 who allow you to keep certain frequencies or range of frequencies in mono to bring that balance between instruments.

I can't agree, we don't hear in stereo, but biaural. The distance of experience between an in-ear mono mix and a stereo mix is similar to that between stereo and immersion. You can experience it for yourself, no. By installing the KLANGapp and switching between Mono/Stereo/3D in demo mode.

Hey @@piotrznamierowski4219 thanks for your comment. You do have a point there about how we hear bi-aural rather than stereo. For the sake of the video, we wanted to paint a clear and simple picture for musicians and sound engineers starting with IEMs, without making it too complex. So, rather than explaining differences between mono, stereo, bi aural, immersive, etc. We went plain and simple with mono and stereo. Thanks for watching us!

This helped me a lot with my problem and made my in-ear-monitoring experience so much better (I am new to in ear monitoring). Thank you!

Good move. Not many people make videos on this topic, you'd think it would be like, A LOT more well known lol. Send this one to every local FOH guy

Thanks for your comment @denniskielton2447. Yeah, we thought that this topic would be more well known. Share it with your sound engineer friends :) It's really a game changer!

It is more well known by those who have more experience. Unfortunately it is not as well understood by individuals with less experience. It is still a great tip for everyone to re-a quaint themselves with. Thank you for the brush up.

I've been using the XVive U4 for about 1 year and I'm extremely happy. For sure it's not the same quality as a high end one but it does the job amazingly for half of the price

That's great @guilhermerivera6312. I am curious, how long does the battery last you? Has it ever died on you during a show? Have you used it when someone else is using a similar IEMs?

This is such a comprehensive breakdown of both options. I like to move around a lot when I play so wireless is preferred but you're spot on about the cost. The cheaper wireless systems are not as clear.

Thanks for your comment @alex_afolabi . Yes, you are right! the cheaper the wireless systems the less clear they sound.

I recently started using IEMs and I have to say it's been a game changer. Gets a bit of time to get used to (two practice sessions) but it's worth spending the money 100%. In my case bass sounds crystal clear, and I control the volume of my mix as a require. Also drums do not leave my ears ringing, as the IEMs also work as earplugs!

Informative and easy to understand. Great job! I use Shure 315, probably 1 driver (?) and reasonable price. Can you tell more about custom made pods. I used to have but never felt comfortable with them as they kept moving out of the ear channel after some minutes.
@MixingPixels2 ай бұрын
Hi there, Yes, the price vs. quality on the Shure SE315 is very good. They use a micro-drivers technology but in essence is one driver. That's unfortunate you had a bad experience with custom moulds. I would recommend you to get your moulds done with an audiologist who's done this work before. They need to feel right in your ears. Also, keep in mind our ear canal changes with time and moulds who felt great before might not feel the same after a few years. Thanks for your comment!
