The reason for so many stones? GLACIERS dragging, grinding & breaking up of larger stones broken off of bedrock turned up from glaciers a mile high.

That coil really nails those deeper targets. Buckles and IHP's make it a great Not Thursday

I'm from northeastern Pennsylvania and we have a lot of stone walls. My grandfather who would be about 106 now if he was still alive farmed here all of his life. He bought and sold several farms in the area during that time. The area was clear cut of trees 107 years ago Wild game is very scarce back then. He said he was told that a lot of the walls were stacked by crews that went around during the Great Depression or they're just after. Farmers always had food and labor was very very cheap. Manny walls were stacked by farmers after picking rocks out of fields

Hi Charlie, I am over on the west coast and I primarily hunt & detect for Raw Gold and secondary mid 1800’s Coins and other stuff. I use two detectors normally in the areas I go into. (1) ORX (a VLF machine) and (1) Minelab GPX4500 (a PI Machine.) I am 1000% confident that with the a good quality PI Machine like the 4500 you’d be digging 18” deep targets and even deeper!!! Unfortunately VLF technology has it’s limits in depth ! The Pi machines will see clearly what the VLF are NOT capable to see!!! … Unfortunately the VLF machines will only go so deep!!! So all these areas that you’ve hammered over and over again with VLF’s > I would bet using a good PI machine with 18” DD coil or mono coil all These areas hammered areas would all light up again and be loaded with good deeper targets!!! Just saying…. Happy hunting Brother!

Scotland and the north of England are covered in what we call staine dykes ,they had plenty of labour and materials .This process started in what was called the enclosures when common land was enclosed and farm land drained and enclosed. Many of the settlers would have been people cleared from their small holdings by large land owners who migrated. They also had horses and oxen

A good day Charlie.. Some very nice items found to be sure. Just a thought though,"6-"8-"10 etc. may be the depth of a given hole dug, but I doubt each item uncovered is at the absolute bottom of the hole as measured, more accurately it's usually found somewhere within the third, second to last, or perhaps the last scoop. I say this because once the dirt is removed, you ordinarily poke around with the pinpointer, and the item is found somewhere in that accumulated removed dirt pile, and you are not generally finally visualizing it resting on the bottom of a "10 ,or whatever depth you elect to stop digging at hole.At least that's what I'm seeing you doing time and again. Just an observation. Wishing you continued good hunting.

I not only think what you may think but, I PERSONALLY Believe the history that we are "lead "to be believed, is absolute bullshit. I've seen evidence of things and sizes of things in the deep woods that far beyond defy the bullshit logic that were told of how they and it's the who "they " were is what im commenting about.

If you're a hunter-gatherer in your hunting a hurting animal you could use a ridge or a natural Canyon to cool off part of the herd. Then you have a scaring party at the bottom and a surprise party at the top. When you get to new hunting territory if you don't have a natural feature to call off the heard. You could start by building walls and then over the course of generations they could get to very long distances. Not necessarily pens but places where the herd can be separated.

A declination change of 2-2.5 degrees per century puts those walls a couple hundred years earlier. Maybe the Vikings left them?

A 2 1/2 ton granite block is easily moved by a team of horses. People need to stop being conspiracy theorists and thinking that people from past eras were stupid and unable to figure out how to get difficult things accomplished.

Here in NE Pennsylvania , many stone walls were sold off in the 1980's and it was so sad for many of us locals . I know of 3 stone mounds that were bulldozed 30 years ago for the sake of building a private road . No thought was given to maybe go around the mounds and preserve them .
