Just started watching so dont know if you mentioned it. Most classic stories were about strength vs power. A strong character is placed in a negative situation those who are obsessed with power come to make their life hell , the hero wins but isnt corrupted by power . Most modern stories seem to be obsessed with power ,victim hood and systems of power .which is what the bad guys were obsessed with.
@camillesharemКүн бұрын
That's a good point. Too many stories these days are more obsessed with the concept of power than the clash of virtue vs power. And unfortunately that mindset makes it hard to write any protagonist who doesn't come off as either flat, insufferable, or a vehicle for an idea rather than being their own person.

Attention, lots of text Sometimes I think that people saw so much of the negative side of live action precisely because it was poorly made on Disney's part, and not because it was a """""remake""" (because in the case of httyd based on the director who is the same as the animated trilogy, not a remake), Because some remakes people didn't even complain about or thought they were bad in the sense of not being better than the animation in certain aspects, Lion King for example, they only spoke badly of the film, it wasn't because of the story. script or something like that because it was practically the same as the previous one, so there wasn't much to complain about, but the problem for the crowd was expression, and at some moments you could see them expressing in looks, dubbing, scenes, music not as vivid as the animation, and so on, If people don't complain about other live actions, it's because either the remake is of a bad movie, which gives hope for the remake to be better, or it's not a remake but an adaptation, which is something that should be happen here, since despite the scenes faithful to the animation, it is not a remake or adaptation of the animated trilogy, but rather another adaptation of the book, as if the director were adapting the book for the first time time, and being quite honest, it doesn't matter if it's going to be the same thing, since the point here is for the film to try to make you feel the same sensation you felt the day you watched or resisted the animated version.the first few times, besides seeing what this universe would be like adapted into a real world, where some people just don't like it, not because it's bad (for the love of god, the live action Toothless is so well done that for me it made the animation seem boring, besides being better than the Animatronic from the theater special which besides being well forgotten, NOBODY talks about it being useless to have a theater version since it is the same same story being retold on a stage), but yes because it brings a certain strangeness to people who have seen a lot of animation that only reaches that universe as animation and not as anything else, which is curiously different from other exemplary live actions that were so successful that no one seems to dare to say an A about them, like the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, "Godzilla", the first resident evil, one piece, but that's because some of these are adaptations of games, so who cares? Speaking of these other examples, one thing I also saw about why these adaptations are live action, it is not necessarily for a modern era, but rather to attract new audiences, which is something that worked quite well with One Piece, Sonic and Detective Pikachu. Of course, I also can't lie that it's really annoying when they change characters like in the case of Black Astrid, but again, it's not an adaptation of the animation, but of the book, and if they could change the the visual aspect of dragons like Toothless where in the book he is basically a terrifying terror with a tooth on his snout, so why not the characters? Not to mention that in real life, this thing about all Vikings being white, with the majority having blond hair and blue eyes, has already become a stereotype, since it was discovered that some had fair skin. darker, black hair, and even specimens with black skin, so her being black is not the problem for realistic fidelity,but for the fidelity of the animation or book, I think the important thing here is not about the visual aspect, but but rather about their professionalism, if they do it well, it's all good, you won't even care if it's black or not, but if it's really bad or poorly done, the problem isn't the lack of loyalty and yes, the work is not done with love. I personally give a little hope to this film, even with some concerns, and I think people should try to see it as a special event, and not as something that should be new, which speaking of which, waiting for something completely new and different can also be a problem, whether for an adaptation, remake or even a never-before-seen film,boss baby, trolls, zilla 98, are different and or new films, but... They are not good, besides that nothing is truly new and unique if we analyze it well, anyway, that's it, I vented (I hope I was a good engagement)

Thanks for your comment, insights, and arguments. Ultimately, this movie is going to have to prove itself on its own merits, and it's been fascinating to see some of the varied reactions to this teaser trailer. People close to me are super excited, and others are sickened by it. Some people are just looking for a reason to be angry and others are going to weird lengths to be overly optimistic. As someone who loves the animated films, I'm hoping that this movie has the same spirit, themes, and fun as the animated originals. And maybe it will draw some good material from the books. My biggest concern is that this film simultaneously represents Hollywood's unwillingness to invest in new and engaging stories PLUS a resolve to step away from animation in general. Which I know some people point to the fact that there are still animated movies being made to refute me. BUT! The proof is in the overall diminishing quality for loads of stories and the fact that so many animated projects are prequels, sequels, and rehashings.

To be fair: every film is a cash grab.
@AbbieKohtiao5 күн бұрын
I would argue that remakes are cash grabs. They don’t just recycle the plot and characters, they also rely on the existing fanbase to show up, whether it’s because of nostalgia or just love for the franchise. Creating an original movie actually takes work in terms of writing the plot, characters, setting, and themes. There are only a few remakes that have adapted the original so well that their creation truly feels justified. Personally, I think Coraline and Bridge to Terabithia were very well done.
@camillesharem5 күн бұрын
@@AbbieKohtiao Remakes definitely have a leg-up, and they are motivated more by the supposed easiness of the production and the high hopes that existing fans will pour in and dump loads of cash. new stories are always a risk, and because Hollywood has squandered so much money and goodwill with bad movies, they're terrified of doing something new. Disney has already signaled that remakes, sequels, and prequels are the order of the day for them. And sadly... As goes Disney, so goes the rest of the industry!
@camillesharem5 күн бұрын
That was one of my big arguments in my first thesis on the history of World War 2 propaganda made by Hollywood. All movies are made to make money. It's only recently that some producers and directors have really thought otherwise, and we've seen how that turns out... Movies need to sell themselves and at the baseline level, they're cash grabs. However! Most movies are major risks and don't come with a guarantee of success. And by that nature alone, they're not exactly cash grabs. So, ultimately, movies are very large, flash-in-the-pan business ventures that either soar, crash, or break even. And you hope beyond hope that people remember you in a few months. Hahaha!

I don't like live-action remakes by default. They're FAR less visually appealing to me, and ironically feel as though they've had the life sucked out of them: Lighting is scaled way back, colors are nowhere near as vibrant, body shapes and proportions are brought to normal, and movement isn't as exaggerated. Because, y'know, there's only so much you can do in reality and not have it look off/goofy. But I find the aesthetic of reality to be *boring;* that's _why_ I go to cartoons. I appreciate the skill that goes into making things like still-lifes or photo-realistic models and such, but it *_bores_* me. It always has. And so it's always been *incredibly* frustrating to me to see this focus on turning things into live-action. They're taking these vibrant, exaggerations of life, drowning them in water, and then handing over those washed-out remains. _They feel like cheap bootlegs._ I know that's not the intention or truth, but that's how it feels to me, and why I will pass them up 100% of the time.

@TaoScribble I find that the live action films for "The Flintstones" do a pretty good job at capturing the cartoonish nature of their animated counterparts.
@camillesharem6 күн бұрын
Like I said in the video, cartoons help to naturally allow us to suspend our disbelief. That's how come they are able to take us to even more fantastical worlds than what most live action films can capture. Avatar stunned countless people with how in-depth, vibrant, and life-like it could make a fictional, alien world, but that's far more expensive than a 2D animation or a full 3D cartoon movie. And while Avatar made amazing profits, so many other movies that have tried the same thing have fallen far short in terms of profits and quality. Basically, it's unsustainable for live action. Animation is currently the best medium for the fantastical and the bizarre desire to march ahead and away from it makes no sense in terms of storytelling or expression. Personally, I blame unimaginative corporate leads who can't identify with the wonders and joys of animation because they're too obsessed with their own world and can't relate to people who want to escape into a story and dream.

If Disney announced that they were doing a live action remake of the Black Cauldron, or Treasure Planet, or even The Rescuers, they would immediately have my attention. The problem is that Disney's tack record is to create soulless, crash grab rehashings that are normally far behind the quality and impact of the cartoon originals, and really that is exactly what we have on our hands with this upcoming HTTYD movie as well. This is a first for DreamWorks, though, so we're keeping an eye on how it'll turn out.
@ChienaAvtzon5 күн бұрын
@@camillesharem - Giving Dreamworks the benefit of the doubt is hypocritical. This trailer is a soulless cashgrab. It is almost as bad as “Snow White”.
@camillesharem5 күн бұрын
@@ChienaAvtzon I'd disagree with that. As another person commented, and as I stated in the video, the HTTYD remake is a cash grab. No denying that! What matters now is how they approach both movies. Disney's Snow White remake is attempting to make a completely different story. The reasons why people have come to hate it so much before even seeing it has been Rachel Ziegler's comments, the controversies surrounding the inclusion of the dwarves, the obvious deviance from the original fairytale, and now that we've seen the trailer, it looks incredibly cheesy. In comparison to HTTYD, the trailer is a beat-for-beat remake of the original cartoon, which is well done and hits the nostalgic beats, but has yet to answer the question; WHY!? In contrast, Disney's Snow White is trying to be very different from its source material and progenitor while HTTYD looks like a clone. This makes them (without seeing more of HTTYD's remake at this point) two different beasts, so they have to be considered differently. Furthermore, DreamWorks is taking their first questionable step into live action remakes. And while I don't particularly like it, they deserve a chance to either prove themselves or fall horribly flat on their faces. Disney has already shown us what they're capable of and have been found wanting. It's on DreamWorks to prove otherwise, but they have to be given that chance.

I just think it would be a lot more productive to pour the time and energy used to make this live action adaptation into making something original. I mean, I suppose it brings more attention to the classics, but I don’t really think they needed more attention just yet. They’re still really popular movies. All I can say is, the movie needs to be absolutely amazing to be anything more than forgettable.

I'm not sure why you went on a tangent about Fan Service, because tbh I don't recall anyone in your comment section, or anywhere really complaining about a lack of it, I thought there was already lots more than usual in this episode with the trying on of various outfits, including bikini's and dom fetish gear, which are definitely not "normal." If anything I was a bit mad they were lazy in reusing the still frame of Yuki in her underwear getting dressed from the last episode, like at least draw it different. Anyway onto what's actually important. If your right about it being different in the Manga, then that makes me lose some respect for the story, particularly that Hitoyoshi apparently was like "No if I persue her then I'm not respecting her" I honestly think that's some wack cuck simping shit, and if that's the lesson I'm supposed to take away from the Manga (Which I'm taking your word for it.) Then that's bullshit. The reason in other media one sided crushes are portrayed as unhealthy is because they honestly are, at some point you have to either get over the person is they have no interest in you, win them over into a relationship with you, or get rejected and move on. The idea that you shouldn't pursue because......it wouldn't be respecting her. I'm sorry that is asinine. If it were simply, he wanted to wait till she had more a context to understand romance so she can respond properly, or he felt that he was inadequate because she is a super awesome badass assassin woman, then I could understand that. But if the reason you gave is correct, I hope the message of the story is he grows out of that. When it comes to Love, you gotta be a little selfish and assertive. The fact its between. "I respect her and thus will not date her" and "Hey Tracy lets Fuck" as some false binary strawman feels very wild. I'm not even sure what your referencing, since most anime romcoms don't really lean into hookup culture, a lot of times they don't even have sex in the story even as an established couple until a timeskip were its simply implied. Kissing is a big event. I honestly felt you went a bit off the rails here. As for the writing advice.... I'm sure its a matter of degree, but I don't really agree into leaning into making things "accessible" a lot of times creative decisions are exclusionary, you have too choose between two different directions which will have mutually exclusive pros and cons. You will appeal to that one person that likes x and exclude the other that prefers y. If you try to be too accessible you dilute all the elements. A Work that is Made for Everyone is a work that Appeals to No One. Maybe that's not what you intended to say, but that's the message that I heard. That's one of the things wrong with Modern Day Hollywood, since budgets are so bloated that literally everyone and their mother has to see a Film just to break even, that have to have the most bland, inoffensive, pleases everyone plot to get everyone, but then since all the films end up feeling the same the audience gets fatigued and it has diminishing returns. By having kinda sorta everything, it excels in pretty much nothing.

I was talking to a guy I've known at my local comic shop for a long time and he said he was impressed with the Captain America trailer. I acknowledged that it looked good but that I'm not that confident in Marvel(Deadpool and Wolverine was an exception as Ryan Reynolds made sure Disney had as little interference in the story as possible.). What story/stories are you working on? 2. What kind of help are you looking for from a group of novice authors? 3. If you join, why kinds of help are you able and willing to give to other authors?

1. I am working on a dark fantasy web serial featuring a shadow hunter and a bloodwitch on a quest to cheat Death herself; a Japanese-inspired fantasy with ancient monsters and powerful phantoms and a man at odds with both struggling to find his place in the world; lots of songs, mostly emo in style (think classic American Football or Jimmy Eat World mixed with Neck Deep and The Story So Far); and other projects as my ever-capricious whims dictate. 2. I am a Big Picture kind of guy who loves themes and plots and character growth. I need help seeing the small details from a fresh perspective. I need to know where my audience is confused and what their expectations are and if I'm not meeting those expectations. 3. I help with big picture stuff. I help people see the end from the beginning and build towards those climactic moments with satisfying payoffs. I tweak characters and plot to match theme, and make sure they all work well together.

Amen. Looks like your channel that deals a lot with lazy writing is suitable to address lazy thinking as well. Plus, I wouldn't trust any business people (like Musk and Trump) to right wrongs in the creative field that were created by business people in the first place. Only creatives can do it PS: funny, I wrote this comment halfway through the video, before you even sited that person's experience. Glad to hear I wasn't far off 😂

Hahaha! Yup, don't trust the people who just champion business to fix a problem that is rooted more in storytelling than anything else. Sure, there are loads of bad business practices that have helped to sink Hollywood, but fixing them won't do you any good unless we strike at the heart of the problem. There's something to be said for Glitch Productions' approach to their shows. They give creative control over to the showrunners and then keep them accountable for their progress. It's led to people like Liam Vickers and Gooseworx creating some truly unique shows, BUT... There also needs to be outsider editors who come in and press the creators to help them clean up and revise anything that should be. Murder Drones is great, but it could have been even better if someone had pushed Liam on some of his characters and world building. Just to keep everything straight and make sure it all made sense, because aside from the main characters, you can see the threads spinning out by the finale. Still, it's leagues above most of the garbage content Hollywood and traditional publishing are cranking out!

You can definitely trust them to improve the country as a whole, but they need to be the catalyst to foster artistic growth
@alexkats3013 күн бұрын
@@sgtaveryjohnson3803 Trump and Musk will never foster artistic growth in today's social climate. Return to past values also means stifling artistic expression that always looks to create something new. It's basically the same thing big corporations are currently doing with the "give us something that sells (works by our previous numbers)" attitude

I'm interested in the discord! I maybe not in the hollywood scene but I did tried to write scripts and try to come up with ideas for a decade. And yea... I agree that no candidate will save hollywood. Besides, all I'm here for is to write a good story no matter what it is!

Sweetness! We'd love to have you join. First things's first, because we've had to deal with a number of trolls trying to hijack our Discord, we conduct a brief interview here in the comments. It's relatively painless, we promise! You just have to answer three questions: 1. What kind of story/stories are you working on? 2. What kinds of help are you looking for that a group of novice authors could provide? 3. What kinds of help are you willing and able to give to other authors?

@@camillesharem 1. I want to work on a story that not only that is a bit ambitious even on a smaller scale, but also I wanted my stories to like have a character that we follow but in one perceptive. Mostly in a sense that is very tensions. I have this revenge story idea that I was trying to get off the ground for years but it never went anywhere consider that the idea that I was persisting was way too ambitious. So I wanted to do the idea again but on a more smaller but also like psychological level into which the character does not know or realized that the actions they did leads to the consequences then after. 2. The only help that I would need when it comes to writing whenever if it book or novel or even a script, is to not try to copy on what's there before and try to make sure that whatever ideas that I have that I wanted to tell, I'll put them to the side later on and then I'll use the ideas that I can use in another project whenever if I get there. 3. My advice for them is to make the best stories and creativity you can try to make and no matter what stages of your story draft is on, never give up your ideas and rethink them in a different format or a different sense that makes sense to what ambitions your putting the foot in the door with.

I was honestly surprised this episode was "filler" because it seems so in line with the themes of the story, that I can't really imagine the story without it. I personally don't see filler as meaning literally anything not in the source material. Filler in context is from older shows that often were stuck with a weekly production where they had to keep pumping out episodes, and when they were risking outpacing the source material and had to create extra arcs and episodes that have no bearing on the plot to pad out time. I do not believe this episode represents that, its a cour production and I would think they have enough source material to at least finish a 12 episode season, (And based off your description of the source material and how far it goes in terms of genre I'd think maybe even a second season.) Anyway it just seems to fits with the whole theme of the series that something that some fans would consider "pointless" to the plot is actually the most important thing to be striving for as far as our characters are concerned. One thing I really appreciate, is how Yuki is almost the reverse of the "girlboss" (Or rather the modern interpretation of it.) Where a lot of modern girlbosses will try to write their characters as almost a parody of what they think a Male Action star is, (Where even a lot of Male Action stars will have some vulnerability or connection to the life they are fighting to try to protect or uphold.) where the writer almost sees the Female Girlboss caring for things that might be considered traditionally feminine (Or even just human.) As degrading or a sign of weakness. Then this series, Yuki delights and takes sanctification doing things that most normal people would take for granted, a few radical people would find oppressive or degrading. Even ignoring modern day politics aside, I think in general A Lot of Western Audiences (Especially Americans) Tend to look done on characters that are servant characters and not trying to achieve their own personal ambitions (Male and Female.) And see any type of service or submission, even voluntary, as fettering their agency and independence. Like being beholden to someone in anyway is something to be ashamed or at least grow out of. I think it has to do with the idea of the American Myth, where we settled the West on our own, declared independence, and the Amercian Dream is the Self Made Businessman that comes from a Middle Class everyone, building their own destiny, this along with being mixed with Protestant Religion of the People finding their own path to God verses the more established institution of the Catholic Church, and the Enlightenment that celebrates reason and individual liberty over tradition. Which I think is awesome mind you, but at the same time I feel it causes us to look down on a lot of traditions that people find fulfillment and purpose in from the Old World. (Which also somewhat exist in Japan, but I'm using European Aristocracy and Servitude as an example.) Where people felt proud of pledging allegiance to a House, A King, A Religious Order, etc. And I feel Yuki being a Maid is an expression of that ideal, she gets joy from being able to choose a position of servitude, because doing things for others brings her happiness. And we see Hitoyoshi, despite being somewhat uncomfortable and probably feeling like he's taking advantage or at least feels awkward about her doing things for him, when he reframes that as allowing a person to show you kindness, is also showing them a kindness it makes him able to better embrace his role as her "master" because in reality its him being a servant. I feel a lot of people see a lot of hierarchical relationships as necessarily exploitive by nature because people overvalue liberty. But liberty taken to its ultimate extreme is isolation. Ultimate Liberty is running naked in the wilderness with no technology and if you break a leg, your screwed. A KZbinr did a video on this topic about Samwise from Lord of the Rings you can check out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpmlamidgtWAd7M I myself wrote an entire essay on it using the phrase from Fate; Stay Night "I ask of you, are you my master?" On a frivolous note to leave, Yuki has quite the nice peach!

The biggest problem with female characters is that they tend to have no female friends. Some of them have male friends (Leia, Hermione). Some of them seem to have no real friends at all (Galadriel in Rings of Power). In the past, a Strong Female Character’s isolation would prime her to fall into the arms of a male love interest (see Belle, Eowyn). Now the Strong Female Character doesn’t need a man either… does she need anyone?

This is one of the subtler reasons why manga like Kimi Wa Meido Sama and Mysteries, maidens and Mysterious Disappearances are good and feel fresh to read. Although the leading heroines in both stories have their love interests, neither story neglects to give them meaningful friendships with other women who also have their own personalities. In terms of Western media, the Wheel of Time novels (a pox on the Amazon adaptation!) has phenomenal relationships between all the main female characters and loads of the female supporting cast, too. But that series is sadly one of the exceptions rather than the rule. Yeah, usually the main female lead is alone. Some of my favorite scenes to write for Knights of Halicruz was the interactions between Jessica and her group of girlfriends. Those scenes don't usually have much weight on the overall plot, but it makes Jessica feel more like a real and relatable girl and not just some kickass warrior, which is the alter ego that we normally spend time with in the series. But those moments help to ground her in a way that I couldn't do unless she had close, female friends.
