Do you have to plant it into soil? Can it grow with just water until harvest?
@gardenbenchtop
@gardenbenchtop 3 ай бұрын
I haven't tried growing it solely in water myself yet, but it sounds like an interesting experiment to try in the future! One concern might be the risk of the ginger rotting if it's submerged in water for an extended period. Additionally, you'd need to ensure it receives adequate nutrients, perhaps by using a hydroponic fertilizer, to support its growth until harvest.

Hi, great tutorial...I've done pretty much what you have shown (apart from pebbles in the bottom and I used compost instead of coir), but I'm finding despite lots of airflow holes around side/bottom, theres still a lot of condensation, recently I've noted vinegar flies are now getting in...and I think a lot of the worms may have have died as I can't see many of them (I bought 1000) and what little food scraps I've been giving them don't seem to be going. Inside the box, there is also a lot of dirt right up to the top of the box...so, is that a sign it's still too hot for them?
@gardenbenchtop
@gardenbenchtop 4 ай бұрын
Hi ceebee0766 - thanks for reaching out with the worm farm issues you are experiencing. Don't worry they are all common problems. Here are my thoughts... Moisture Control: Excess condensation might mean your bin is too wet or has poor drainage. Can you confirm if there is any condensation coming out from the drainage holes in the bottom of your bin? If not, the holes may be blocked. Vinegar Flies: These guys usually appear if the bin is too wet or there are too many food scraps. You said you aren't feeding them much scraps, so maybe bury it under the bedding to discourage flies. Missing Worms & Food Not Disappearing: This could indicate that the bin environment isn't ideal. I don't think they have disappeared because you mentioned there is dirt on the walls, which is usually a sign that worms are climbing the walls. Don't be afraid to dig around in the worm farm - you'll be surprised just how many worms are in there. Also if your worm farm is relatively new, the worms will have plenty of fresh food from the original starting materials, so they may not need the food at all for the first few weeks. Temperature Check: Worms prefer temperatures between 55°F to 77°F (13°C to 25°C). the only way to tell if it is too hot or cold is to use a thermometer. If it's hotter, consider moving the bin to a cooler spot and out of direct sunlight. Sorry about the long reply - hopefully it helps with the worm farm!
@ceebee0766

Thanks for your response :) I ended up putting lots aeration holes around the top of the lid and then promptly freaked out that they will escape during the night! There isn't any condensation or hardly any worm wee in the bottom box (but I only got a thousand worms about 3 weeks ago and they're itty bitty ones). I put flyscreen mesh on the bottom of the feeder box (which also has holes for aeration around 9 or so around the size of a thick pen/pencil). I ended up removing the food - as I suspect the the original starting material was pretty thick, as I used the packing material, sugar cane mulch and compost). They sit under our patio, so the temperature should get pretty even and now moving into autumn, it may get colder during winter, but we have a hessian bag ready to go). I tested the bedding and its moist (not wet, wet), but when I squeezed it with my hand, no moisture came out)...and I put on some dried leaf litter the other day and then topped this with newpaper...but the newpaper always feels damp from the condensation...and so far, no escapees out of the top layer aeration holes...it's a pretty big box (aquarium sized box)...so I'm thinking I may just not have enough worm??

😊 Hi I need to know if ,my mistake of putting mine in the freezer means they not going to grow at all?’did I kill them ??
@gardenbenchtop
@gardenbenchtop 4 ай бұрын
I personally haven't frozen ginger before I always grow my ginger and put it in the garden, so unfortunately I have no experience with it. I have read that freezing ginger can damage the cellular structure, so what I would try is defrosting it and checking to see if the rhizome isn't too mushy. If it feels normal, then try growing it like I did in the video - you really don't have anything to lose. ;)

I am new to your channel so I wanted to say hi! And also add another trick I use to get cuttings to send out roots. I actually learned about this method from an albo grower in Australia but it works every time for me. I haven’t tried every single type of plant that has nodes like pothos and philodendrons, but I have tried lots and it’s worked very well for me! So I thought I’d share. 😊 1) as most people are aware you let your fresh cutting harden off (I let it sit out for about 24 hours) to let the fresh cut dry out. 2) I get a glass jar (I have lots of different shapes and sizes) pick one that will hold the node up out of the water. You don’t want the actual node down in the water. Only part of the aerial root should be submerged. 3) you want to get a fish tank air bubbler with an air stone that will sit down in the water and constantly add air to your water. 4) you want to add 3ml peroxide per liter of filtered water/ distilled water. This adds extra oxygen to the water. And as usual, you will change the water out every 3 days. And clean the glass jar out the best you can with your hands when you change the water. 5) and this probably should have been #1! Always make sure your hands and work areas that you will be handling your albo or whatever it may be that you are trying to root is clean and sanitized. This is especially important for Albo Monstera’s. I hope this helps someone! 💚

The Australian Brush (Bush) Turkey can eat and totally destroy every cucumber plant in a garden bed. 'Nasty deterrents' put around each plant is a failure. The bush Turkey just scratches all the soil away from the Cucumber. Also, forget about any growing tomato plants, all eaten by Mr/Mrs Turkey.
@gardenbenchtop
@gardenbenchtop 7 ай бұрын
I haven't had much experience with Australian Brush Turkeys, but I can definitely empathize with the frustrations of losing crops of fruits and vegetables. Rats and possums are the critters that constantly raid my patches. I struggle to even grow rose bushes and wisteria, because they eat the fresh buds and new growth - which permanently stunts the plant! 😠

Hi @ANutterwitch-wq1gj - I sourced my sand from my local nursery which has a section that is specialized for Bonsai's. So I try go for a sand that is classified as 'coarse'. I did a quick amazon search and found quite a few options, like this: amzn.to/40JKegK What you want to avoid is any sand created for sand pits - because they add in a host of chemicals that you DO NOT want in your houseplants.

Great video but one thing I noticed is that the string around the PVC goes all the way down into the soil to the bottom of the pot. Won't that essentially make this a self-watering pot that keeps the soil constantly moist and not allow the soil to dry out between watering (which monsteras prefer)?
@gardenbenchtop
@gardenbenchtop 10 ай бұрын
Great point @GWhite1001 - I think you would be right about this fact. Personally, I haven't had any issues with the rope keeping the soil too wet - but that being said, I do live in an area with low humidity (Aus), so I think the moss probably evaporates and absorbs most of the moisture BEFORE it reaches the soil. I think on my next moss pole, I'll take your suggestion on board and stop where the moss is. Thanks for contributing your thoughts on this :)

Could it be that the flat cut surface being in the water help the plant absorb water and get stuff going. that seems to be the major difference to me. One has a cut surface in the water, and the other does not - it's cut surface is largely above the water.
@gardenbenchtop
@gardenbenchtop Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, you’ve brought up a great point! That definitely could be the main difference between the two pieces of ginger. With one having the cut surface submerged, and the other having it exposed above water, it could be the key to successful ginger propagation. I'd love to give it another go in the future to see if we can verify the theory :) Keep up the keen observations! 😊

Beware!! I bought this product on Amazon. It was highly rated with thousands of ratings, but it didn't work. I'm suspicious of those ratings. Neither the pH or the moisture meter worked. My moisture meter arrived with the arrow pointing to dry. I stuck it in moist soil and it never registered anything. The pointer stayed pointing to dry. The pH meter isn't working either. Out of the ox the pointer is about 7, and I tried different places in my large yard and the pointer never moved. I will try to return it for a refund.

I'm so sorry to hear about the troubles you experienced with this particular moisture and pH meter. I have read and heard from forums that others have had trouble with moisture meters in general. I personally didn't have any issues with the meter, but yours may have been faulty, so hopefully you can get a full refund. There are plenty of other ways to test your soil for moisture. I also like to use the finger test when I'm doing the rounds.
