Appreciate the point you made regarding things. I have no issue with your statements but wonder why cost of thinning are never discussed. At the end of the day regardless of how large a tree may grow or the quality of the tree what you return on investment? Not counting the cost of the land there seems to be many hands in the pie. Most small Land owners need to hire out the work needed to manage and maintain the timber property. Is there any profit left?

As they say the devil is in the details! There lies the rub. I have a good ideas of what my objectives are, What I don’t know is the best way to achieve those objectives. The details so to speak. Do management plans tell you how or only that you need to? If they don’t give the how then I’m looking to purchase a 40 acre parcel that’s about 50%timber. I’m only in early stages and will be seeing the property next week. I definitely plan on developing a management plan. The extension service will be my first stop. Before I get a plan developed I think I need a survey and a timber cruise. This will establish a base line so I can measure progress if any.

Wish i had a crew like this cutting my trees. I have 2-3' deep ruts left by skitters that ran after a rain and now the ruts are sun baked like concrete channels. I asked them to spare as many saplings in the pine stand and what they did save they skinned bark off every single one. Not to mention left DEF jugs, grease tubes, water bottles, styrofoam plate lunch containers etc around the worksite. Also left some work mats that they felt were no longer usable but with the carriage bolts sticking out of them will likely end up in my tractor tires one day. They cut trees outside of the area in the contract as well. Ultimately just left a dam mess thet could have been cleaned up a little better. The road I had around my land is now littered with tree tops, limbs, and ruts, so i cant even get back to the other half of my property. Im completely disappointed in the job and to get it back right will take a third of the profits being paid to another crew for cleanup. I would strongly urge anyone to have all stipulations put in the contract with timber manager. I didnt feel the need to since our timber manager has been managing our timber for over 20 yrs and shared our desire to not tear up the land. Unfortunately he wasnt present enough to make sure things were done right. I dont really want to throw a fit with the crew as much as let others know to treat them like employees and let them know from day one what you expect. I messed up and made friends with them and that makes it hard to give them the blessing out that they need to hear.

This is likely NOT the Shoal Creek variety, which is slightly more floriferous and may be potentially smaller, though just as vigorous a grower, if not more. They are very similar; Shoal Creek is simply an improved hybrid
