I really like the bachmann locos for their price. Sounds like the frisco loc9 needs a tune up.

Good modeling is more important to me than fine detailing.....and I admit that I can be a bit of a rivet counter. But model railroading isn't cheap and some models are too expensive for what they are IMO. Also, the CN unit is an ET44AC. This is not a Canadian variant, but is a lower emission version of the GE Evolution Series.

Yes I agree with your view! The hard part is finding the balance between detail, and cost. And yes my bad, I must have misspoke, they are in fact ET44AC variants, as opposed to ES variants. Thanks for watching!

I don't like the audio sound effects. I was always happy to hear the natural sound of machines, whether they were real, prototype locomotives or model electrics. They should sound natural, whatever that is, not like something they aren't. In this hobby we are playing make-believe but we should still be grounded in reality. Just my opinion.

Yup, I'm sick of $300 sound locos. I sick of the price, but I'm REALLY, REALLY, sick of these companies using us customers as their QC. Every single manufacturer I've bought brand new locos from has sent me a loco that has had issues. Scaletrains, Atlas, BLI. My Athearn Genesis locos have been great. Three of them, flawless. I just got another one today. It ran great, but after about an hour it started making a clicking noise sometimes. So now it's every manufacturer I've bought from has had issues. And to top it off, it literally takes MONTHS for them to fix this stuff and get it back to you. Oh, and you have to pay shipping to get the loco to them! Sick of it.

@openeyes-411 10 күн бұрын
For real? That's just sad!!! I've never spent more than $150 for a loco - and that was on ebay, for an Atlas WITH DCC & sound! I'm not afraid to carve off cast-on grabs & add wire ones and other details - or strip & repaint to get a reasonable loco...And I think we all need to get back to that mindset - and stop paying these obscene prices!
@BoomFootShot1
@BoomFootShot1 10 күн бұрын
@@openeyes-411 Yeah, unfortunately the locos I wanted either weren't showing up on ebay, or were and almost as much as new so I just bought new so I didn't have to deal with someone elses headache. That isn't always the case though since even brand new I've had plenty of issues.

I bought my son a Bachman set about 10 years ago, and recently the GP 40 stopped working. Is it worth repairing? Additionally I only buy used rolling stock at train shows, for next to nothing, I’ll upgrade the trucks , wheels and couplers and I’m very happy this way. I did go ahead a splurge on a Athern Genesis SD70 with all the bells and whistles. Thanks for this video

Frisco is a GP35. 35s are identified by their spartan cab and unique smaller fan in the rear. The 30s have the same fans at the back but they have a unique cab that no others have

I made the same EXACT points 3 years ago, and was laughed at...nice to see how the turn tables. At the time I had a new Athearn BNSF ES44AC, and a new Bachmann GP30...and here we are...alot of people FINALLY catching on to the same thing I did in 2021.

The cost of this hobby IS out of control......when you consider that almost ALL of this stuff is manufactured overseas, and how much it costs to get a shipping container over here, its just stupid. ALSO stupid is how even the secondary market is ridiculous.....one can still find deals at train shows or swap meets or on ebay or marketplace, but for the most part people are quickly turning our hobby into a place to make money.....turning the hobby into a business.....i live in illinois and i model chicago area commuter railroads, and this rush to scoop up all things bi-level coaches and cab cars and anything with Metra painted on it is blowing up the market.....people are emptying the shelves and are showing up at shows asking 50 to 100 percent over msrp on everything they can get their hands on......and used stuff is just as bad......10 years ago you could walk thru a train show and buy a good loco for 50 bucks.......today, forget that twice as much. Deals can still be found, but you better be handy and taking them apart and repairing them......which i dont mind......i look for those deals on ols stuff. But how are we sposed to attract new people into this hobby when everything costs so much.......anyway, good video....glad i found your channel....i subscribed......rant over. lol. P.S....nice F40PH.

these days the runs they make are so limited, they might as well call each run limited edition. and they price it so high that only a few can really get in on it, and then the people that can rightfully scoop up what they can. and these days the cheaper models seem to be purposefully made to have incorrect details at times almost as if it is a punishment for not being able to afford the more expensive models. worst part is, as a BN(SF) / BNSF fan, they are finally making so much of what i wanted with good details and its just insane how much they want now.

You should be getting in on the Gold mine of the second hand market. Plenty of people going to rest homes or passing away and used stuff is out there for decent prices. The New stuff with all of the bells and whistles = has always been top dollar. If you want new DC, Trainworld had Genesis SDP40F units for $99, RTR SW1500 for $99, and RTR SD40T-2 for $89. You can't beat those prices.

I only buy old stuff that I can fix up. Modern new HO scale is ridiculously overpriced and I do not do sound as I can't stand all that noise. I model the turn of the 19th century up til the early diesel stages, so I have F-7A's & B's that I detail adding glass, grab irons, nose & top lift rings, cab interior, MU & air hoses, coupler cut levers and wire them for future dcc (no sound) installation. I also add or change incandescent lighting to SMD LED's. I've been buying old MRC models because the motors are already isolated for adding dcc. They also feature 5 pole skewed armatures in a can motor with dual brass flywheels, cab interior, all grab irons installed except for the eyebrow and front grille grabs and brass horns atop. They're dcc ready in that the motors are isolated. I also have several brass diesels, an F-3A, Fairbanks-Morse H12-44 and 2 Baldwin VO-1000's. My cut off time period is 1963 when the Central of Georgia was sold to Southern Railways. Most I've ever paid for an engine was for the brass F-3A & it was $127.00. Your Bachmann sounds like it has a couple of cracked gears. I learned in the mid 80's never to buy Bachmann when I first got into HO scale modeling. I still do not buy Bachmann. Cheers from eastern TN

The Frisco loco is terribly dirty, and may have a bad gear. It's easily fixed. Maintenance is necessary on your equipment. Do it, it'll run like a dream.

This model is a derivative of the former MDC/Roundhouse consolidations . The origins of this are from the late 60s. This paint scheme is called a Bumblebee. I have this locomotive from the 2006 issue in DC and it is an excellent running and silent locomotive.

Perfectly possible to do O gauge affordably. If you want everything brand-new and have everything rivet-counter perfect in scale sized equipment, yeah, you're going to spend a fortune. If you're willing to go a little more old-school with traditional-sized semi-scale equipment, buy more things used and hunt for deals, you can save a lot and still have fun. Just bought an MP-15 switcher for $75 at a show. No fancy bells or whistles, but a good running powerful little engine in a paint scheme I like. So my operating accessories aren't scale. So what? Fun to load and unload real freight instead of just imagining it.

The unidentified black cylinder on top of the boiler appears to be a generator / dynamo to power the electric headlight. The sound of the dynamo winding-up is paired to the lighting. No doubt Athearn recommends 18" radius; can it turn tighter?

Ah thanks for the info on the startup whine! I was wondering what that was! I think they do recommend either 18” or 22”. This layout is all basically 22”
