I have a Mac mini with a limited number of ports. And I have connected several things - drives, printer, Apple watch charger, SD card reader, etc. Managed to get everything working by careful distribution of devices across a few simple USB hubs - ones I've had for some time. Mostly USB-C. But I'd keep getting messages about a device (usually a drive) having disconnected. Yet - between these messages - everything seemed to work OK. Changed one USB hub to a powered one, plugged in a USB power supply, and everything has been rock solid ever since. Can't even tell you how many USB hubs I've got plugged in because, since getting it working, I don't even look at them.

Will usb hub 2.0 with 500ma max capacity run my keyboard and mouse my keyboard requires 500ma to run

Based on the information provided, it's unlikely that a USB 2.0 hub with a 500mA maximum capacity would be able to reliably power both your keyboard and mouse if the keyboard alone requires 500mA. Here's why: USB 2.0 port capacity: Standard USB 2.0 ports are typically limited to providing 500mA (2.5W) of power per port. Keyboard power requirement: If your keyboard requires 500mA to run, it would be using the entire available power capacity of a single USB 2.0 port. Mouse power needs: While most mice don't require as much power as keyboards, they still need some power to function. Even a low-power mouse would likely push the total power consumption over the 500mA limit. Hub power distribution: USB hubs need to distribute power among all connected devices. If the hub itself is limited to 500mA total, it wouldn't be able to provide the full 500mA to the keyboard while also powering the mouse and itself. *To solve this issue, you have a few options:* Use a powered USB hub: A self-powered (active) USB hub with its own power supply can provide full power to multiple devices simultaneously. Connect devices directly: If possible, connect the high-power keyboard directly to your computer's USB port, and use the hub for lower-power devices. Check actual power consumption: Verify if your keyboard actually draws 500mA continuously. Some devices may list maximum power draw but operate at lower levels most of the time. Upgrade to USB 3.0: USB 3.0 ports can provide more power (up to 900mA), which might be sufficient for both devices. Remember, exceeding the power capacity of a USB port or hub can lead to unreliable operation or potential damage to your devices or computer. It's always best to ensure you have sufficient power available for all connected devices. Is it Spider-man or Spider-man's uncle who said With great power comes with good connections and reliability?

As of today, May 8, 2024, this video of yours is the BEST & UNIQUE regarding USB hubs & docking stations. It's because you explain in details why the powered hubs are better than the non powered but in many cases they still fail in data transferring. The reason is the USB BUS on my laptop is overloaded with the amount of data to be transferred. You made this explanation CLEAR & easy to understand with your ILLUSTRATION of a BUS. Then you held a USB dock in your hand and said that adding a DOCK will fix this problem because it adds more buses. NO other KZbinR has done these before. Now, I understand why my powered hub works intermittently. Thank you very much.

Wow, thanks! The World of USB can be confusing as it's marketed almost with the idea that we have unlimited connections without any impact on performance or data transfer issues.

@@reluctantcreators Yes, that's the loophole that all the USB hub manufacturers are exploiting. People call it "misleading". I call it as it is "legally lying".

What about those with PD charging? Could that potentially be dangerous for the PC / mobile device? (Context: My S24U blacked out on me once using a powered USB hub with PD charging...)

Compatibility Issues Not all devices are fully compatible with all PD charging profiles. Using an incompatible charger or hub could potentially lead to: * Slower than expected charging * The device not charging at all * In extreme cases, damage to the device's battery or charging system Quality Matters The safety and reliability of PD charging largely depends on the quality of the hub or docking station: Reputable brands invest in proper power management circuitry and safety features, Cheap, low-quality hubs may lack essential protections against power fluctuations

Normally used in server rooms and datacentres when you don't need to have a display but the software is looking for one. Works upto 4k ► Virtual Monitor Display Emulator: geni.us/virtualmonitor
