Ok then. Practical and fun solution to some issues we've discussed. It's so obvious, but Xmas/new year clouded my thinking. I've just plugged the theremin into a guitar multi FX. The well regarded affordable "Tank-G" [most others should work] This now places audio into both channels of headphones. Now can ride the Vol control of either the theremin or the FX device to approximate function of the missing 2nd antenna. More importantly, Multi FXs with built in noise gates can help combat the inerrant distracting circuit hiss of the theremin. The fun of spacey reverb, more varied delays, and different modulations, overdrive, amp and cab impulses, etc are now on tap to turn this toy theremin into something more like a fully fledged synth.

This sounds promising. I wanted to try the theremin with a Zoom MS-70CDR but the idea with a noise gate is excellent. I have one from Donner and also the Donner Arena 2600. If this has a noise gate (I think so, but not sure), this might be an interesting multi fx unit.

@@RainerMuenz I dare say the review would indeed contain the word "toy". I bet they would get a good tune no problem, just that without dynamics the subtlety will be lacking. There are a number of mods I imagine making on the Stylo, the first is adding a jack for a volume pedal.

I have a problem with my synth mixer, maybe you can tell me if this one acts the same. My mixer has an effects send and receive as typical. My problem is the effects are added to the channel so if I am using say a ping pong trem effect I get 100% of the dry signal and a percentage of the effects (don't know what that percentage is). So what you end up with is mud pretty much. I don't want to put effects boxes on all my channels, who can afford that? So I bought another little mixer for just my keyboards and run that into my effects then back into one channel on the OG mixer. Thanks for the video, tho not too interested in how it works for recording, more interested in the live aspect.
@RainerMuenz
@RainerMuenz 13 күн бұрын
I do understand your problem... unfortunately, I cannot say that this mixer will solve it. To be honest, I am not sure. I have experimented with reverb and delay and it sounds OK (not great), but to my understanding it is a mix of the dry signal plus an amount of FX that I can add with the knobs. First, I can choose the max. amount of FX sent to the channels, then I can choose the amount of FX used for each channel. I wouldn't think that I can get a 100 % wet signal as result. It's also possible to connect an FX unit to the mixer and use this instead of the internal FX, but I guess this won't solve the problem. Honestly, I do the same as you. I use a Behringer MX400 as sub mixer for my mono synths and send a combined signal to my FX unit(s), then to a mixer where I don't use further FX. So I am on the save side.

I seriously advise anyone really wanting a theremin as a serious musical piece of kit to invest in the Moog Theremini. £350 but so worth it for it's build quality and variety of sounds etc. Cheaper models just don't do the Theremin justice and end up as just novelty toys.
@RainerMuenz
@RainerMuenz 23 күн бұрын
You might be right in this case. In my opinion it doesn't need to be s Moog. My other theremin from a small company called Golem-instruments works fine as a more serious instrument. However, it's me who can't play melodies but uses it for atmospheric sounds only.

How many octaves do you get on the antenna, and is it possible to to tune it so the zero beat null point is about 50-60 cm from the antenna? What I'm seeing is that the pitch field is very small and the zero beat is something like 20 cm from the antenna, which will make it almost impossible to get the intonation somewhat correctly.
@RainerMuenz
@RainerMuenz 26 күн бұрын
You are absolutely right. According to the manual 30 cm from the antenna the sound should start. I was not able to achieve that. It might work when using the audio out or headphone out but not when using the internal speaker or with other electric fields like my phone nearby. How many octaves? I don't know but not many in my opinion. I have a theremin from Golem-instruments which is much better with the octave range and null point. The Stylophone is interesting for me because of the additional synth, so all together it will be fine for ambient soundscapes but maybe not so much for real musicians. Playing melodies might be hard - or at least it needs perfect tuning and not using the internal speaker.
@dread_rat
@dread_rat 26 күн бұрын
Plugging it into a grounded amplifier or audio interface or grounding it otherwise might improve things, also try putting it on a microphone stand if you have one. For soundscaping it is a better option then similar priced pitch-only theremins. It's a pitch only theremin and a Tannerin / electro-theremin (slide instrument designed by Paul Tanner that the Beach Boys used in Good Vibrations) in one package, plus the modulation and delay effect, it's quite a good deal.
@RainerMuenz
@RainerMuenz 26 күн бұрын
@@dread_ratI will do as advised when I make a real recording within a soundscape. I can put it on a tripod with more distance to other electric fields. Will also try how it behaves when connected to FX pedals and a mixer. If needed, I have a DI box. So there are a few options. My other theremin has pitch and volume control and a knob for octave changes (I think, five octaves), but it's not a Tannerin. I like the flexibilty I have with both instruments. 🙂

How does this compare to the beat thang
@RainerMuenz
@RainerMuenz 28 күн бұрын
I am not sure, to be honest. The beat thang has more sounds but is much more expensive. Its sequencer might be a pro. But is it for real finger drumming? If not I personally would prefer the MPC for beat making, with all the expansion packs on the market. The Yamaha is my choice when drumming manually and not beat making or using a drum machine or goove box. Just my thoughts without deeper knowledge of the beat thang.

To be honest, when I added this to my setup I thought I will put a string sound on top of a dark horror atmosphere. I really like the sound of this little box, more than the Solina sound, so I bought this instead of the Behringer. But then I simply tried how deep it could go... connected the MIDI keyboard, two octaves lower, hold button, and then tweaked until I got these bass tones. This was a bonus for me in addition to the strings I still enjoy playing (usually not used on my recordings). 🙂

Really appreciate all your work on this video. The only additional question i have would be: Does it work well as an audio interface for the computer. My audio interface is VERY old (toneport UX2) and i need to replace it with something modern. I stream on twitch and while doing game streaming with external console capture works great on my old mac, i have issues when i stream music production session during which the audio will simply stop streaming and i have to relaunch my software to get the audio streaming again. I also am looking at audio interfaces for the more traditional use cases. Anyway, i do dawless and hybrid and might be setting up my first few gigs in 2025 so this new mixer might be just for me if it can thrive in all these roles. Thank you again for the video.

Thank you for your comment and question. The L6 can be used as audio interface. No driver is needed for Mac, drivers need to be installed on Windows computers. I can't say how stable it is or if everything works smoothly as I use it DAWless only. I would assume that it should work well... but that's just what I think after reading the manual and it might depend on your equipment and use cases. Sorry for not being more helpful in this matter.
