This run ends up in Hidden Valley where most climbers set up base camp for a multi-day trip. Far fewer people than Avalanche Gulch. The only downside is the climb out over the little ridge where Casaval starts, then it's downhill to the parking lot.

The guide is right; I usually have to carefully pick my line for the first 1000 feet from the saddle at the top of the West Face. Can be blue ice if it's scoured from the high winds that blast over the saddle. Otherwise, my favorite ski on Shasta.
