Beautiful tone, balance and execution. What a great piece to start out the day. Many thanks for this great performance.

Terrific! This work’s Scherzo is pretty closely based on the fugue from Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 59 #3, both of which are pretty fast. Problems inevitably surface in the bow arm when the tempo gets faster than about 126-132, especially in those chromatic descending sequences, but there’s a really easy way around them. If you always keep the RIGHT arm motion in consistent, tiny clockwise circles over two strings, in groups of two rather than the threes that are written, then the left hand goes down the fingerboard very easily in fourths or in thirds-even when switching between intervals during the same sequence-but when the bow’s circles stay automatic, you can suddenly go like the wind.

PS re the seated/standing discussion--entirely likely they rehearse seated. Once the signals are in place, position makes little difference. String players are used to having folks around them seated, conductors standing higher up on podium, etc--the ears, eyes, go everywhere and anywhere, along with the intuitive antennae... :-)
@whpalmer42 жыл бұрын
Actually, the standing vs. sitting makes a difference in the sound production (most are better standing) and consequently rehearsing is done standing. No one rehearses sonatas or concertos seated for a performance where they will stand.

Lovely performance, crisp and clean as needed, beautifully rich warm and romantically projected too, with subtle micro-timings :-) Bravo the violist, great sound, luscious low range, solid technique. Oh how much I loved playing that solo that starts shortly after 12:18

Dvorak wrote this while on a “busmans holiday “ in Spillsvill Iowa amongst the Czech community there during this time a troop of native Indians came into town and this is where he got rhythm of the 2nd movement from. If I’m wrong I stand corrected.
@NoMoreMrNiceGuyNYC2 жыл бұрын
You're wrong. There is nothing "Native American" about the rhythms or the harmonies- they're all Czech and built on the pentatonic scale as well as traditional European harmony. The third movement is a theme and variations on "My Country 'Tis of Thee," about as American as you can get. The whole "Indian" thing is a myth. And a lil' racist.

Got it. So here's the deal. At precisely 11:48 the violist plays a double stop (two notes at the same time) in a melody where at every other instance there is just one not played. It sounds "out of place" to me. In listening to about 25 KZbin performances of this quintet, there are two where the violist does not play the double stop. The rest do. There is no question that the score and part indicate the double stop. My theory is that the score and parts are in error. Perhaps a smudge on the autograph manuscript made the copyist think that Dvoralk wanted two notes to be played. This isn't the first time a copyist altered a Dvorak score. In the last movement of Dvorak's opus 96 string quartet (The American) there is a two-measure section where the violist plays the wrong rhythm. It doesn't sound bad, and there is one professional quartet, aware of the error, who indicated to me that they preferred the error. But it is an error, none-the-less (my source is an editor at Henle). The error is found in Kalmus scores. And the error is in the part and not in the score. My hunch is that this is an error as well, although it appears in both score and parts. I do not have access to the autograph manuscript or the person who does hold it, so, for now, it is just my hunch. To me, it sounds "out of place." I invite you to start at 11:40 and listen through to 11:55 and tell me if you find the double stop at 11:47-11:48 to sound right.
@davidyoung6331 Жыл бұрын
As I mentioned, there are two performances on KZbin where the double stop was not played. There were professional string quartets with an added professional violist. They must agree with me.

Virtually unknown next to his other so-called "American" works (the New World Symphony, and even the American Quartet), it's as good (or better) than both. The relative anonymity is due to quintets (unlike symphonies and quartets) being not a standard genre and are created by a quartet essentially hiring a "temp" extra instrumentalist. Yet many quintets, such as Mozart's, the Schubert and the Brahms are among chamber music's finest works in any form.
@unaffiliateduser89954 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Many quintets lie in the shadow of their four-player counterparts.

I agree. It's a silly gimmick. If you close your eyes, you can't tell whether the players are standing or sitting. Far better for all three to sit - communication is far easier. I speak as a chamber musician of more than 50 years' experience.

Elaine S what makes it your favorite?
@elaines57504 жыл бұрын
@@daviewavie112 The love of a certain musical composition can often defy description by mere words, so perhaps it's the opening 2nd viola solo in pentatonic, or the general energy and beauty of the piece or how the parts feed off each other or the variety of melodies just within the first few minutes of the first movement! I can't put my finger on exactly one thing that I love about this piece, so I guess just everything about it makes it my favorite, well, plus, Dan Koo was in my student orchestra many years ago. Very talented musician. All of these musicians are!

A good question, but not really. In practice, good chamber music players communicate aurally rather than visually. Any visual communication is corner of the eye stuff anyway. All the same, my personal preference is to have all three players seated. As it happens, I played this work last night, and all three of us sat down.
