Do songs like this help people, I'm genuinely asking, not rhetorical. I write music and wonder what the effects on others could be. The last thing I'd want is to hurt injured people. I have my own issues and wonder if expressing them is self indulgent or helpful to others. I can relate to this singer. There are songs ive written i just dont want to sing too often because it's fucking depressing and gut wrenching.

it definitely can. this song was a life changer for me when I first discovered it. in 1994, I was 17 when I got it and this song helped me realize I wasn’t alone. that young males were also abused in that sense. it gave me an understanding that was previously never really discussed. I still listen to it on occasion when I get into a depressed funk and remind myself how to deal with and move on. so, to answer your question, it definitely can help. but please remember that it has to come from a very unique, honest and vulnerable spot from within. it is extremely easy for it to come off as cheeky, cliche or cringy.
