Negging as a 'formal' pick up concept is significantly older than Tate. A 'neg' is a reverse compliment, or when delivered properly, what normal people call teasing. Unfortunately people who weren't properly socialised as children decide to practice these concepts out in the 'wild', and don't have the calibration necessary to vibe properly, so come off as weird, or insulting.
