I always wondered why the holes aren't pre-dilled to final size. Why do you need to cleco everything together, then drill it to final size, and then disassemble, deburr, reassemble, and then rivet. Doesn't that take a lot of time and require different sized clecos? Anyone?

I hope the two seater will have an aluminum cowling too. A lot easier to polish than fiberglass.

Great up grade. Suspension really helps. I was thinking maybe a trailing link system on the mains like a Rockwell 114. Even I would have a hard time doing a rough landing with that mod...LOL. Thanks for the vid and may God bless ya'll

(Sry 4 bad englisch, I´m German) Thank for your videos. You do a great job building planes. I´ve never done it. Maybe a single of my ideas may be a good one? Video Hummel ultracruiser wing assembly min.1:52: I saw 10 golden scews, maybe made from steel. Steel together with Aluminium may cause contact corrosion one day. min16:22: a spacer (flat material) and an outer spar (angle aluminium material) was assembeled. The outer spar has a drilled big hole to fasten something. It will be fixed forever by drilling some holes from the top down and put rivets into. If the spacer was made of angle alu and the outer bar was made of flat alu, some screws could allow to change it by unlocking them. min 23.00: fixing the down skin I saw no drain holes. Maybe the plane waits some days outside, the air inside the wings leaves its water . The ribs could get some notches to avoid to be sealed by dust and to allow the water to flow to drain holes. Video Ultra Cruiser windshield and fuel tank assembly min.7:20: maybe the tank could be a little longer but narrower, then it would fit between the angles. Two more deeper angles fastened by screws throug the outer skin could hold it, and two „tension straps“ (steel) could hold it down. By loosening the screws the owner could remove it for cleaning inside. Video Hummel H5 wing tanks There are flanges, little noses, which allow a hose clamp to fasten the tank. They must be parrallel to the tank. If they are aslant, it`s a warrenty to get loose by vibration and slip off . To prevent this a steel tire could hold both of them together, or/and the little noses are longer and are bent around a hose clamp like an „u“ to hold it in position.

As seen at harbour freight.......so what's the extra 5grand for?
@EllipsisAircraft6 ай бұрын
The price tracks. A basic HF predator engine is $1,000. But a Vangaurd or Kohler is $2,000. PSRU's are around $1,000. (See ACE Redrived). Forged connecting rods are going to be $100 apiece, unless custom. Then probably $1,000 for two. Exhausts are $200. Flywheel delete requires new custom carrier for charging system, and magnets for CDi spark, etc. it adds up. I doubt a builder could do all of this for less than $3,000. The additional is of course labor/profit. Each motor probably has 8-10 manhours into it. When items are selling maybe 1 per month, and light commercial hangar shops rent for $2,500/mo. People gotta find a way to stay in business. People have a right to profit from their efforts. I don't see anyone offering something similar for less. How 'bout you?

@DennisLithgow-f8k Жыл бұрын
Having done all of this from plans, working alone, this is SO much easier / faster. Started by watching Bill Spring VHS videos of building the Hummelbird to understand the process. Knew nothing about building airplanes. I learned a huge amount that you miss with a kit, but I can see the lure of building this way. And you don't save any money building from plans because you build practically every part at least twice. Took four tries to get the sail between the rudder and fuselage to come out. There were no kits at that time though. Nice video.

It would fly a lot better and use less runway if you all had gone with the B&S Vangaurd 23 and not that heavy predator from harbor freight.

@erl2nd Жыл бұрын
Yes that is a valid point, knowing how to install a rivet properly is very important as a lot of damage can be done by misuse of the usually pneumatic hammer and anvil tools. I work for Boeing aircraft for a number of years and the slightest lack of focus can damag a whole part, and you're back to square one so give yourself time to learn how to use these tools, I would also recommend spring stops for your drill bits and it would probably be a good idea to offer some instruction on how to properly deburr because too much deburr can also damage your part. Great video Good question.

depends. guys who switch from pusher to tractor on a pylon mounted engine like a Coot or a VJ-22 gain about a hundred pounds of thrust Ed Lesher's Teal was more efficient but the shaft to the prop behind the tail takes some engineering
