I have to wonder what is so special about learning and reproducing the decimal expansion of π in particular. If one knows how π is defined, it should help to recall that the digit before the decimal point is a 3, and possibly even that the first digit after the decimal point is a 1. But most of the remaining 20,000 digits still might look pretty random. Another number that has an infinite decimal expansion is the number ⅓. Personally I am confident that I could recite the decimal expansion of ⅓ up to more digits than this guy did with π. And I was not even dropped on my head as a kid.

The decimal equivalent of 1/3 is receptive. The equivalent of pie is not.

When I was in the 11th grade I proudly told ny chemistry teacher "I memorized the Periodic Table of Elements." (92 elements)..... He responded " So what? You can always look it up." Same thing. Big deal. My chemistry teacher was NOT impressed. 😮Since then I havent bothered to memorize my phone number. Nobody likes you for acting like a genius. 😮

Scientists have proven that Daniel Tammet is not memorizing answers. He is working each problem in his head at that time.

It's astonishing how his brain works to calculate faster than a calculator. Also, the way he told us that he had two seizures when he was a child, also advantages and disadvantages I like his advice that nothing should stop you because we can see that it is difficult for them to interact but he did it very well.

I would strongly recommend watching this mans documentary and the actor Dustin Hoffmann played in rain man named ( Kevin peek ),Kevin peek memorized 8 chapters of an encyclopedia at 2 years of age and went on to do greater things with the help of his dad who still travelled with his seavant son Kevin at 80 years old and dressed and fed his God given talented Son.

Dave is really a stupid guy. Daniel told him pi day was march 14, 3/14 the first three digits of pi, after which Dave says, "3, what was the day?" He just told you. Late he tells Dave he recited pi to twenty-two and a half thousand places after which Dave asks him, "How many places?" Again, dufus Dave, he just told you. I don't know if Dave is just stupid, or he doesn't pay attention to what his guests tell him because he is busy formulating his next question.

People confuse having an extraordinary memory for numbers with mathematical genius. Being able to recite pi or do calculations in your head does not make you a mathematical genius. Being able to formulate new theories or solve complex problems makes you a mathematical genius. His ability is extraordinary, but as he said, there are drawbacks. He seems to have found a way around the drawbacks which is a great plus for him.

Great video. Please make video on hurdles in institutionalizing this at Indian primary schools and how to address them. These may be resistance to change by edu officials, training the teachers, time to adapt for the system with new way of teaching, any 'risks' of integrating them in curriculum (Is there anything incompatible with current higher education mathematics and how to transition) etc. Thank you.

Nice. Don't you hate it when people tell you something can't be done? I do. I have a slightly different method. Start with a circle made of string. Take a pencil and pull it into four equal corners to make a square.

He said David Letterman looked like the number "117"; since 117'-0"=116'-12" and 117:00=116:60, it would be interesting to place the numbers 11612 and 11660 (one at a time) before him to try to find out if he sees these numbers in a similar manner to the way he sees "117".

I can do the date thing. After watching RAIN MAN, I taught myself how to compute the day of the week from year 0 to year infinity in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars. I'm not a savant -- maybe a high-ish IQ -- but probably not a genius. This skill can be learned by a "normal" person. (Although, this being said, I've never really run into a person who can do it...probably because they didn't care to learn it!) As to memorizing pi out to 22,514 digits in a few weeks -- totally different story! Never mind learning Icelandic in a week! I can't imagine anyone who isn't a savant accomplishing this.

Very rare abilities. Im a neurologist and epilepsy and neuropsychology is my areas. Looking at your interview and your social abilities and body language im quite positively sure you don't have Aspergers, Doctors these days peddle their sh*t and keep diagnosing everyone with Fibromyalgia, depression, Anxiety and especially chronic concussive encephlopathy even with extremely minor trauma to the head. A lot of time I feel they are trying to give you something "tangible" that you can hold on to and make them come back for more appointments and also get good reviews.
