Lathes don't normally have a Y axis. Parallel to the spindle is Z and perpendicular is X. On every machine parallel to the spindle is Z. Also first checks should be that the chuck is actually attached, e-stops and brake work. Check the oil level in the head too.

I used to make that mistake calling y the cross slide and x the carriage. If you look at it more like a mill on its side, z being the carriage and x the cross slide makes sense

i watched to the end, where is my fancy card?? lol i love that youtube recommended some random shop's safety video. i would forget my card every time in that holder. i always use a keyback with kevlar rope for my cards, but that would not be safe with a milling machine. maybe i would stick my car keys on the card or something...

Surely an emergency stop. This seems to be a shop where hobbyists pay to get access to machines (like "Maker's space") so they have extra safety features.

@@skunkjobb it runs past the end of the lathe and in front of the mill. It looks like it's to stop people walking behind the machines. They should probably move it down on the lathe as a birds nest could catch it, although you shouldn't really be letting one form
