This is actually my headcanon, that Kris can only live for a limited amount of time without the soul.

I had a whole animation story in mind, actually. I imagined Kris needing the soul to close the last portal, but out of frustration and to make sure that they don't get held back, they remove it. However, over time, their health starts to noticeably deteriorate., which creates a race against time.
