This may sound like a really dumb question, but what do you do with the rose water?
@FreckledCalifornianАй бұрын
Hello! Not a dumb question at all. My two favorite uses are as a facial mist/toner for skin and in rosewater desserts. Since it's stored in the fridge, it's so soothing for skin on hot days.

Hi, how often you water your dahlia’s in hot climates?
@FreckledCalifornianАй бұрын
Hi! It really depends. Some raised bed soil drains faster than in-ground, some weeks are hotter than others, and when the plants are larger I have to water less because they shade the soil....so I recommend getting to know your garden soil and how long it takes to dry out. Hope that helps!

What kind of branches are you using for the trellis?
@FreckledCalifornianАй бұрын
not exactly sure, as we mix all our pruned branches together. Most likely plum, pomegranate, or apricot.

Gorgeous roses!! I love David Austin's as well and have several in my Indiana garden. Do you spray or use a systemic on yours, and was also wondering if you get the dreaded Japanese beetles out where you are?
@FreckledCalifornianАй бұрын
Hello! We do get those big green beetles (I think we call them fig beetles?) but I don't spray anything for my roses. I'll say, we don't get a lot of humidity or moisture in the Summer, so I think we avoid a lot of common rose problems.

Hi - where did you purchase the saffron corms?
@FreckledCalifornianАй бұрын
There are a couple different vendors listed in my blogpost on saffron!🙂
@jupru220Ай бұрын
Awesome video! Do you crush your saffron stigmas after they are dried? I've only eaten saffron once. That was at a Persian restaurant in St. Louis, Missouri (at the Central West End). It was in ice cream. I think it was a homemade vanilla ice cream with saffron and rose petals. It was really good. The spice is too expensive for me to justify buying it myself. I'm not sure if it would grow in my humid climate of Indiana, which also has very cold winters. This is really a good video. Thank you for sharing!
@FreckledCalifornianАй бұрын
hello! That ice cream sounds divine. I keep my saffron threads whole in a jar until I'm ready to use. Then, I use as the recipe instructs. Some recipes call for it whole, while others want it ground. It's worth trying to grow!

@Aztecs9112 ай бұрын
Nice vid. So after the air dry period are they ready to eat/use?
@FreckledCalifornian2 ай бұрын
yes! After the curing portion, they can be used or stored. Actually, they can be used fresh too (like garlic). The curing is to prep them for storage.

One tip that is helpful is instead of pulling them up, use a spade or fork to lift them. This avoids any damage to the skin.

Hello from La Mirada! Your garden is awesome. I wanted to ask if you’ve ever had problems with rats getting into your garden? I have some neighbors with unkept fruit trees and I’m paranoid about the rats finding their way over the fence. I do have a cat but is there any other way to deter rats? Ty
@FreckledCalifornian2 ай бұрын
Hi, rats are a real problem in almost every urban garden, and unkept fruit trees definitely don't help. The rats tend to run along fencelines between homes, so it's a lot of our outer/perimeter fruit trees that will have damage, not really the garden. We have used various covers to help protect individual fruit or even whole trees. I have a blog post on various fruit protection techniques: freckledcalifornian.com/2021/06/22/protecting-fruit-in-an-backyard-garden/. Other than that, I do try to limit potential hiding places or homes for rats around the yard (like garden sheds or storage containers).

Hi lovely dahlias. Is it possible to grow dahlias in tropical climate?
@FreckledCalifornian2 ай бұрын
I think it depends on the specifics of "tropical" but I know gardeners in Florida, humid parts of Colombia, and Hawaii that do. Sometimes they will struggle more with powdery mildew and diseases that like humidity. You'll never know unless you try! I recommend checking out my dahlia growing articles on the blog too.

What is the best way to dry them? Do they get moldy if left out overnight, for instance?
@FreckledCalifornian2 ай бұрын
I have full instructions here: freckledcalifornian.com/2022/12/14/growing-chamomile-in-the-garden/ but if you don't use a dehydrator (my preferred way), you'll have to air dry. Air drying can be difficult depending on how warm and dry your climate is. I go over that on my blog.

Great video! Those are giant pots do that need that big of a pot or root depth??
@FreckledCalifornian2 ай бұрын
Generally, the larger the pot the better. You're right about the roots needing space, but it's also less work to water. You could do a smaller pot, but you'll have to make sure to keep the soil moist.

I planted lemongrass seeds in January (because i was doing this in my apartment). It is now early April and the leaves are long and green but the stalks are thin, some are green, others are green with a maroon-y tint. All these videos talk about trimming it back but their lemongrass is CRAZY thick, like big bushy bundles. Nobody seems to be talking about care/trimming during those first few months. Should i leave it alone for a year or go ahead and trim leaves back to the little baby stalks to promote "bushy-ness"?? Im having so much trouble finding videos telling me what to do😫 I HAVE PICTURES😂
@FreckledCalifornian3 ай бұрын
When I first started with a single lemongrass stalk, I didn't prune or do anything for a few years. Mostly, it was because I didn't know what to do. I think it will be fine if you let it grow bigger. Hope that helps.
