Thank you for the info, however... I keep all my utility costs, month by month. My hot water heater is in the garage, 6.5 years old, gas powered and it is the only appliance on gas. Each winter in SC, my bills go from $20 to $77 and $110, the last 2 months. Showers are comfy so I am getting enough hot water but it sure is expensive in cold weather.

Why I disagree. In LA, our water heater is in the garage and lately, at low 40s outside, the water heater runs even without us having used any hot water yet that day, like early morning, no showers yet. So it cannot be that well insulated. And why would a little more hurt?

This guy is full of it. I have seen my gas bill go down with a water heater blanket. My water heater is in my garage and it gets cold in there. So yes a water heater blanket helps a lot

This video is illogical. Heat transfer is contingent on a variety of factors. First and foremost is the ambient temperature. Never mind the intake water temperature and volume used in a given hour. Seems to me, that a water heater will lose more heat during winter in Alaska than it will in Mexico.

I’m in Maine and don’t use a blanket on my heater. It’s in a cellar built in the 1790’s. It’s only kicks on when it’s used. So, I’d agree it’s not needed. Maybe you have a inferior water heater. Some cheap model. Seriously, don’t be upset at my statement but, even when it was -18F out and my well pressure water switch had some ice freeze inside it. The water heater never kicked on until it was used.

Modern water heaters come with R16 closed cell foam. This is the bare minimum amount of insulation required in walls and half the insulation required in attics and floors. R16 simply isn’t enough to completely insulate a tank of hot water that’s 100 degrees warmer than the ambient temperature. The DOE estimates a blanket will improve efficiency by 7-16%, which means most people will break even on a $40 blanket after a year. They can be used forever and you can take it with you when you move. You’d be crazy not to use one.

I have to disagree. I have used an insulation wrap on my last two water heaters that lasted over 13 years and the noticeable difference was the burner only came on when there was a demand for water somewhere in the house (e.g. shower, dishwasher...) In idle mode the burner would not come on as the water temperature in the tank was maintained at the preset of 120 degrees F. A month before the last water heater was replaced I removed the wrap and noticed the burner would come on several times during the day to maintain the water temperature when there was no demand. The water heater is in the basement where the temperature is about 60 degrees F. The fact that the burner duty cycle was significantly reduced added to the longevity of the tank.

It may not make a huge difference but is there at least some benefit from doing it my water heater is in my basement and it stays slightly cooler down there than it does in the upstairs so I'm wondering is there any benefit at all By the way that's a very good looking pronghorn in the background.

Yeah! Let’s just add a pump on the DHW line to “recirculate” the water. Except there’s no way for the water to circulate without … a recirculate line installed! A great way to save energy too! Pump all that hot water through uninsulated pipes to cool off just to send it back to the hot water tank to heat it up again! What a goof, clearly a stupid sales pitch intended for the uninformed.

There's also a bypass valve that you need to install (ideally as far away as the heater as you can) under a sink or something that joins the hot and cold lines. This pump pumps water up through the hot water lines, across that bypass and BACK DOWN to the heater through the cold line. The valve has a thermostat in it so it'll shut off when the water is hot enough, and the pump will sense the pressure and stop.

Nope. The key operative: ALWAYS have fan blowing DOWN, all seasons. For some fans this is CW, others CCW. But DOWN does the trick. Winter warm air with the fan blowing UP won't mix into the occupied area of the room because the entry side of the fan operates at a relatively low velocity, and low velocity does not penetrate very far.

Would you not have to have a return trunk 3/4" line from the further reaches? If not just putting a pump on the hot water outlet of the heater is not going to cause the water to circulate. By the time I run 60-70 more feet of PEX, with the crimps, tees, 90 degree angles, and the pump it is a lot more that about $350.00, plus if you pay someone, you are talking a lot. I'm curious how this is supposed to work?

If I already have a roof unit that needs to be replaced (it’s a good 50yrs old and can’t keep up with the Southern California heat). Do you think the cost of switching to a split unit with the heat exchanger on the side of the house in the shade be offset by the savings of having the heat exchanger in the shade
@michaels3720

It is not a recirc pump.. It us a pump to increase flow, your plumbing is an open system; water from the street, water to sewer system. Insulating a tank, reducing the heat transfer will save you money, maybe not as much with the newer tanks and how long it takes to recover the costs is unknown. A $24 is a small investment.
@MichaelCampbell01
@MichaelCampbell01 2 жыл бұрын
It is not, it's a recirc pump. I have one and it does save a LOT of time since the water's hot basically instantly. I can't say it saves money (probably for me it did not since my water is cheap anyway), but the time savings is nice.
