Good info but just want to expand so ppl know to think about the next steps too. For an ethical kill This has to be paired with trailing or post shot tracking as part of an ethical shot imo. You apply the content of this video to aim but you need to use sign after to see if things panned out how you intended and track accordingly. You push too hard on a wounded animal w a bad shot and you may never find it, but if you use sign to confirm where you shot it and what damage you've done... That same animal you might have lost you might find close by bc you gave it time to lay down and die VS jumping it early and it running off who knows how far to die. (I'm sure this is species dependant ad well.) Also proximity matters... Closer you are the better imo. I've had arrows go the long way through a whitetail... My uncles .54 conical black powder ball go Texas heart shot and conituned to end up in the boars cranium. Circling back, the knowledge in this video will help make the following process easier if you miss your mark or something out of your control changes the point of impact.

I would suggest at first not setting a time limit using this test. In all my 50 years of hunting I get into the position to shoot from many varied conditions from standing, knelling, sitting or shooting prone over pack or the pack, coat or some bag over a barrier. I always try to be efficient setting up my shot but never rush and if I am in time good and if the game moves that's the breaks. After using the test for a bit then timing can be used to discover the best way to carry gear or what motions to use foe easy quick setup.

I've been caught by not practicing with my combination of gear. One rifle-scope combination worked ok with light summer clothing, but while wearing cold weather gear I couldn't get my eye near enough to the scope. Another example was handloaded ammunition that was too long to work in a fully loaded magazine. The ammo worked fine in the chamber and when loading a single round in the magazine. Test the combinations you plan to use.

Killing an animal for sport is so cruel
@RedKettleEfficientHunting2 ай бұрын
I understand your concern, and I agree that the idea of killing animals can feel cruel. However, hunting is not about sport for most of us-it’s about responsibly harvesting wild meat to feed our families. Hunters take an active role in nature, respecting the animals and ecosystems, and ensuring balance just as nature intended.

Didn't notice a neck shot.in your list. I only used it once, it put the whitetail down [immediately], but needed another shot to kill. I didn't like that heart shot from above, looked too narrow a path to me. Not because of my marksmanship but more to my ability to SEE the intended path. I will study further before hunting this year. Thanks.

I’ve been planning a separate video for neck shots and head shots but it’s still in the backlog. Agree. Some of these angles can be challenging.

@@RedKettleEfficientHunting GREAT! I just subscribed so I don't miss it. Although I did use the neck shot once, and it took the deer down on the SPOT. Don't know if there is a BEST aim point, and if not dead by once shot, where would you suggest a second shot be placed when you can walk up and use pinpoint accuracy? Well, I mean I'd like to see your answers in the video. Thanks

When Sig USA got 'offside" with Angela Merkel due to German parts ending up on SIG-Sauer guns sold to central American countries she stopped allowing SIG Germany to export some things to USA. I am oversimplifying it I am sure, but SAUER cannot sell this rifle in states as it has SIG branding. So they aren't sold here - if they ever are I will get one. Maybe someone can explain better. I have an SSG 3000 which is almost the same plus an old 200 hunting rifle and love them.

@@mmal7982thanks for the summary. What a shame not have easy access to one of these. I’ve read the Norwegians picked a variant of this rifle for their standard target rifle because of its combination of good quality and reasonable price. Hopefully one day these will be available this side of the pond.

What magazine options do you have for the Sauer STR? If you have well priced factory ammo available then 6.5x55 will be excellent choice. If you want a good tripod without spending too much money I'd recommend a Leofoto with their MA30 head (copy of the RRS anvil), definitely better than a levelling head or a ball head. The Leofotos are much nice that some of the cheaper tripods out there. The MDT Ckyepod is pretty much the standard bipod for PRS these days, the double pull ones are nice but really expensive. Tier one from the UK do their ATAC bipod which is very similar but a bit cheaper.
@RedKettleEfficientHunting3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the bipod and tripod input. Much appreciated. I ended up with an MDT single pull ckye. It was still pretty expensive even though it was the single. But I like the versatility and build quality. Fantastic, thanks for flagging the Lefoto. It looks like a great piece of kit and more reasonably priced than what I’ve seen so far. So far I have two 5-round magazines, which isn’t ideal. But, I can reconsider my options the day a mag change costs me a first place in a competition. Which isn’t anytime soon :-) The rifle likes Norma Golden Target and I can get them at a reasonable price. The MV SD isn’t great, but good enough for practice. The rifle loves factory loaded Lapua scenars. Very accurate and low MV SD. I’ll post a test soon.

Accurate mag makes 10-round mags for the STR/SSG3000 for 308/30-06. The 6.5x55 do not work well in this mag due to the tapered case. 243win custom barrels with 1-8", or faster, twist and "diesel loads" with VV N1XX should work well for PRS, the 10 round mag and decent barrel life in the STR. 260rem would ofcourse work equally well. Both the 243 and the 260 can be loaded over max cip oal in the long Sauer mag.

I think this is a bit too simplistic . I use a 3.5-28x riflescope and would recommend that for many a hunter. I nearly never shoot at 28x, but use it tons to observe at that magnification.
@RedKettleEfficientHunting3 ай бұрын
Hi there. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. With a 60-second limit, it's challenging to make the content nuanced. I think you're making a great point about the benefits of high magnification for observation. My point was really in relation to shooting where more isn't necessarily better. Happy hunting!
