God, I wish we could arrange the panels like that! This works, but it should be available natively, without awkward lining up of the windows, inconsistent GUI elements, having to repeat every time :( Good track, BTW!

Thanks. Win 11 has some 'preset' buckets for windows etc. But yes this was actually a kinda nice layout in a way. Reaper has all those panes etc yet it is a PITA overall. Get three screens. That is what Reason was really designed for and it is fabbo. :-)

20:40 - don't you miss the remotes for inserts in the mixer? that was such a great feature for mix/master! too bad they've removed it in v12 and probably there's no plan of bringing it back... imagine, if we could assign couple of selected knobs & buttons from the inserts section to be visible and controllable from the Mixer! No other DAW has a feature like that (ok, Bitwig is close with track / global macros)! BTW, good video! Now I'll have to watch the other episodes ;) :D

Honestly no I don't. Never used them and TBH can't even remember them properly. I think to me they felt un-Reason. But I understand that some did like them so the loss of a liked feature is always hard. I don't love the new split Seq window as that makes things less elegant once the track count goes above about four. That feels somewhat un-Reason to me as it seems more like every other DAW. 🙂

Reason inspires me the most. Been using it since version 1. In between I tried several other DAWs... Cubase, Live, Bitwig, even Pro Tools. That was when there was this split between Reason and Record which I didn't like. all the other DAWs just hampered my creative flow with their awkward ways of handling things. Finally went back to Reason after it became one full DAW and it's been the best choice. It's a rock-solid software unlike ALL the other DAWs I tried and I just love the skeuomorphic design of the rack incl. back side, patch cables, etc.
@BenedictRoffMarsh11 күн бұрын
The Reason-Record thing was interesting. An audio-only DAW makes great sense in certain ways esp for strummer-singer types who don't want/need synths (yet) - see Harrison's analog with the sound of digital and WAD Luda get accolades for that very thing. I always ran R+R as-one so it was just more Reasonfulness :-)

Ummmm, I have explained this soooo many times. It is a digital recording error - probably CODEC in/around OBS. I actually had it happen again briefly in my current video series Approaching Reason. Thankfully it only took a tiny section that no one missed. Whatever it is, it is thankfully rare.

Thanks yes, today I dipped into the new Korg Poly Pony (or whatever) at NAMM and all the fake fairy dust about it being a game changer. It sounds like every other synth DAW or otherwise for the last 3,000 decades (hyperbole kids). Great if it solves a real problem in your rig but otherwise DX-7 & Fairlight/Synclavier were game changers, this is just the game playing itself. :-)

Using 's' as a shortcut to turning on and off snap is a game changer. Just be aware of which snap you are toggling. What ever is active between the transport bar (clips) or the midi (notes) section.

I see that you prefer to keep the effects devices under the instruments rather than inside the "Insert FX" block. Is this a habit or is there some difference? It seems to me that keeping the effects devices in the "Insert FX" section will bring order to Racks even more.
@BenedictRoffMarshАй бұрын
I discuss that here and again in later episodes (to come right now). It is a workflow thing for me as fx under the synth are part of the sound - pre-desk. Meanwhile, effects in inserts are part of the mix. There is no right/wrong per se. :-)

But it wasn’t, Cubase VST had live effects in 1996, with instruments coming along in 99. Propellerhead & Steinberg worked together in partnership with Recycle & Rewire. Steinberg were very much at the forefront at the time, I remember when Cubase VST was released the amazement at having real-time delay & EQ. This isn’t to take away from Reason or Rebirth, they were amazing too although rewire was always a bit painful for me. It’s much better having the rack VST we have now.

Great intro. I can fill in; Ernst was the head of MIDI association here in Sweden, and wrote for magazines. Pelle and Marcus developed Nord Lead and Nord Lead 2. Pelle built his own professional hardware vocoders and synthesizers already back in the 1980's and 1990's. Small rack units sold in our boutique store Keyboard City here in Stockholm, tragically it's not here anymore. Ernst also worked for Fitzpatrick import group so he knew everything about synthesizers and samplers really. A cool thing he once told me: he was called in the middle of the night as pop group Lustans Lakejer couldn't program their bassline right in their Sequential Pro One. "Take a taxi and come to the studio because we are dying here", so he took a taxi and fixed the bassline for their hit track "Diamanter" (Diamonds).

Love this! I am in the process of selling all of my hardware and with each piece I get rid of the more and more I am realizing I could have done everything I needed with Subtractor 20+ years ago. I think there is a little bit of magic with pushing analog and the beautiful ways it breaks up. I've overcome that with using re-amp boxes to run into stereo overdrive pedals. Every VST can now get a flavor of analogy-ness. Great video!

I think from a sound designers perspective, synths are generally the same especially if they are the same type of synths. Alot of the differences with synths, people will over emphasize. From different filter technologies, to oscillator technologies, some of the differences are fairly subtle and can take a fairly trained ear. There are drastic differences in certain tech like FM vs Analog but i get what you are saying in terms of two Analog synths, you won't really be able to hear much difference. The big differences people talk about are the quirks which some people might use to benefit for certain patches but for more generic "Analog lead" sounds, almost anything could pull that off even a very "digital synth". I think a big truth is the majority of synth users are preset browsers and the sound of the synth is often dictated by those presets which alot of times is more dependent on the skill of the sound designer vs the capability of the synth itself. That said GUI differences can be a huge difference. After finally purchasing an Analog synth, the main benefit is just having the dedicated controls immediately available. Or some digital plugin synths might have a more inviting GUI vs a synth with buried menus and obscure workflows. I think for most songs the average user won't care if you used an OBX, Jupiter 8, or a Subtractor for you synth Brass patch. Great patches and horrible sounding patches can be programmed on all synths. All will have certain quirks though user can take advantage of but at the end of day you'd be surprised what the end user can't hear. Some times people will end up preferring the very digital synth.

thanks for understanding the mindset. Yes clearly a DX-7 can sound different from a Model D. And yet in many cases something that works (and listeners don't note or care) can be done in either. It is the obsessing over trivialism that I rail against :-)

I often play using a midi controller into a simple VST host software of a single VST just to have a computer instrument more or less, given your use of a few extras in the DAW, would this way I do it be too limiting with this instrument? I think it seems really interesting regardless, so I might buy it anyway, just wondering if it will suit my style

This depends on you. In every typical sense, PK-999 is a complete instrument so it will work just dandy.
