Appreciate the video. Got a thrift store deck with really blotchy playheads which I'm pretty sure is corrosion, isopropyl alcohol doesn't affect it. I've seen plenty of people recommend Autosol in writing, but very little documentation of application, let alone results. Great to see how effective it can be without disassembling, really didn't want to chance damaging the playhead or auto-reverse mechanism. I'll grab some Autosol in the next few days 👍

The Dragon is a great deck and there came a few decks that took its place as the reference in the AUDIO magazine those days and I love mine . It was a childhood dream and I bought it used, but the prices are stupid, I agree with that. I have a few decks which sound great, too, for example a Dual C 824. Outplays the RX 202 no doubt about it so Naks are not allways the best, that‘s for sure.

That's a nice looking tape deck right there Marantz is a good brand but my favorite is the pioneer
@GordMcknob20 күн бұрын
Now ,, you need to re-record a test tone of 1K at 0db ,, then play if back ,, if the meters on both channels are not at 0db ,, you still have a problem.. You’ll probably need to calibrate the record and playback of both channels , unfortunately fir that work , you’ll need an original Marantz service test tape for that particular deck , which might be hard to find no a days 🤷♂️
@mr.nobody542219 күн бұрын
You don't need original Marantz tone tape. A tone generator and oscilloscope does fine. It's not rocket science.

Where did you get the pinchrollers? Everywhere I see model "RXPN0001" which seems to be the right one only. My TR555 has autoreverse so 2 pinch rollers per deck
@mr.nobody542222 күн бұрын
I use a caliper tool to measure the pinch rollers, Diameter, width and the shaft hole. And I purchase them by size from "Fixyouraudio.com" or Ebay by size.

I agree with the Nakamichi comment. There have been millions of hi-fi cassette decks produced over the years that kick the crap out of a Nakamichi Dragon. I've spent 40+ years servicing and calibrating cassette decks and have no idea why so many people worship them as a brand. Merry Christmas! 🎅

If you’re just replacing the main flywheel belt, you only have to remove 2 screws. The one in the center of the flywheel bracket and the one on the far right. You can leave the 2 screws on the far left alone. The flywheel bracket will then hinge forward just enough to slip the belt between the flywheel and the bracket. 😊

@@mr.nobody5422 Indeed. Thanks anyway! But now I fell into the second (terrible) problem with this deck. Everything seems perfectly, but the deck is damaging the tape when playing. Sound was also terrible, very dull and out of phase and each time I played the tape, the sound got worse. When I looked inside there was a lot of residue around the tape heads. It was cutting off little slices of the edge of the tape. I had a lot of trouble getting the deck out when I changed the gear. Maybe something is bent inside, or something is a little crooked. Have you experienced this problem before? Not an easy one to repair this tape deck!

IT NEVER GOT BETTER THAN THE CD DESPITE THIS VINYL REVIVAL OF THE LAST 20 YEARS. BEYOND ANALOG VS DIGITAL ARGUMENTS AND PREFERENCE,WHICH ARE APPLES AND ORANGES,CDS WIN HANDS DOWN. THE VINYL REVIVAL IS MOSTLY DUE TO OLD SCHOOL LUDITES WHO JUST LOVE THE FORMAT REGARDLESS OF ALL ITS IMPERFECTIONS,AND YOUNG FANS THAT NEVER HAD THE EXPERIENCE OF CDS AND SEE VINYL AS SOME KIND OF HOLY GRAIL AND HAVE BEEN BRAINWASHED INTO THINKING ANALOG VINYL IS SUPERIOR. LETS ADDRESS THE CONFUSION. CDS ARRIVED IN THE MID 1980S IN RESPONSE TO THE FAILURES OF VINYL. THE INHERENT DEGRADABILITY AFTER EACH PLAYBACK DUE TO STYLUS WEAR,THE ONGOING PROBLEMS OF SKIPPING AND SURFACE NOISE DESPITE BEING NEW AND MINT VS NO WEAR OR DEGRADATION WITH CD LASER PLAYBACK. THE NEED TO COPY AN LP ONTO TATE FOR PORTABILITY AND LATER COPY ONTO FILES. THE STORAGE SPACE NECESSARY FOR LARGE COLLECTIONS. CDS NEGATED ALL OF THIS. GENERALLY BETTER AND CLEANER SOUND. EASY PORTABILITY AND TRACKING. CAR CD PLAYERS DROPPED DRAMATICALLY IN PRICE AFTER A FEW YEARS. EASY STORAGE. I HAVE 1200 CDS STORED ON 2 BOOKCASES. TRY STORING 1200 LPS IN A SMALL APARTMENT. CDS OVERPRICED EARLY ON VS CHEAP LPS. NOW ITS THE OPPOSITE. SHODDY PACKAGING EARLY ON BUT NOW GREAT BOOKLETS AND LINER NOTES COME WITH CDS VS LPS SCANT LINER NOTES AND INFORMATION. AND THE LAST PHYSICALLY COLLECTIBLE FORMAT BEFORE ALL THESE DIGITAL FILES NONSENSE. IT NEVER GOT BETTER THAN THE CD. PUSHING VINYL TODAY LIKE TRYING TO REINVENT THE WHEEL. TRYING TO SELL THE PUBLIC A BILL OF GOODS WITH RIDICULOUS CLAIMS OF ANALOG SUPERIORITY AND RIDICULOUS PRICING. AND FINE ONLY IF YOU LIVE IN A SPACIOUS HOME WITH PLENTY OF ROOM FOR STORING A LARGE VINYL COLLECTION. TRY THAT IN A STUDIO APARTMENT. WHY DO PEOPLE STILL FEEL THE NEED TO DEAL WITH VINYL AND ALL ITS PITFALLS??????? Reply, Reply All or Forward

I followed your video to take my RS-TR355 left hand transport apart, found two missing teeth, and ordered the new gear and am now attempting to put it back together, but I find the screws for the head are different lengths and I do not remember which side of the head had the longer screw. Looking at your video at 9:05, does the longer screw go on the left or right side of the head?
@mr.nobody54222 ай бұрын
The screws should be same size. They screw into same plate.
@philwarner66042 ай бұрын
@@mr.nobody5422 Thanks for the reply. One of the little screws is 0.300 inches long and the other is 0.210 inches long under the heads. Both go through the plate they screw into so maybe it doesn't matter which goes where? I put the longer screw on the left. Then when I could not get the plate with the head to sit down far enough to put the pinch rollers on, I had to remove the head again so I could shift the plate underneath sideways so the plate the head mounts to would fit down far enough. I was then able to get the pinch rollers on and am about to re-attach the head, but the plate hits something on the right side when I try to slide it forward. I just Hope I got it back together right, but my patience is a bit thin right now and I think I'll wait and get a fresh start in the morning. As someone who pressed records for Furnace, the company Metallica just bought into recently, that is a manufacturing defect. Vinyl was not allowed to cure for at least 24 hours. And probably didn't use cooling trays.
