very interesting combination; the short hightonecut tones of a banjo, combined with long midlowtones of a cello.... try this please also for eg 20-40 seconds: parallel: one finger touch banjo one string with 1/4to 1/2 to 1 pauses , accord eg - x ▫️ -▫️ - ▪️▪️ ▪️ - ▪️ - while cello plays fast sets short low+high ( no mid) tones as while the bow goes with ("strikes") long moves on one or two combined strings while two fingers ( ring- and point-finger?) change eg 4-6x position during one bow-move on that one (two?) string.... OR if this too hard to do: .... hit bow shortfast on 1 or best two strings and change fast the finger-positions... second try to test please ; 😂😂😂 : place bow on cello and playfully test ranges and boarders.... and hold and play cello like banjo have fun !!! place it on youtube including the startup laughing or irritating angry phase at startup firsr try... 😮😂

Excuse my ignorance but is there a huge repertoire for an instrument of this kind? I'm curious because I'd like a mandocello & if the extra 5th makes a difference I'll get one made, rather than buy one off the shelf so to speak
@reelcello2 жыл бұрын
There isn’t much written specifically for a five string cello (Bach’s 6th suite is one example) but there are whole worlds of repertoire written for fiddles, which then are more easily translated to a cello with an E string. You could also string a Mandocello E-A-D-G, which makes an octave mandolin. But keeping it in C is a different and worthwhile challenge/endeavor

Good stuff. I'm learning to write for strings, and a challenge is multi-stops/chords. I was told that intervals should NOT be in fifths, as that is more difficult for string players fingering-wise. I'm guessing this was more directed at violin/viola, am I right? Because your simple voicings here are of course using a fifth each time. Thanks for your video and I look forward to learning more, especially this question.
@stringlingo2 жыл бұрын
When writing for strings, especially for recording/studio settings, you were given good general advice not to compose voicings in 5ths. It is a little easier on cello to pull it off, but the voicings given in this video are best heard in pop, traditional (think fiddle tunes), jazz, and other improv settings. That said, any PROFESSIONAL string player should have no problem playing fifths in a chord voicing, especially if the shape is as given here with the 5th on the bottom, played with the 1st finger. Some folks may disagree with me however...... in any case if you're composing for orchestra you have so many options with all the string sections, divisi, etc, that you should be able to easily avoid writing in 5ths on the same part.
@sbwyo19662 жыл бұрын
@@stringlingo thank you very much for your wise words. I study orchestration privately and my teacher has stressed a lot of what you say here. Especially, that you have other options so why make it more difficult on the string player? Part of it is that I have been composing small ensemble chamber music, so I figure using multi stops on occasion will give me more harmonic capability, than just playing single notes. Anyway, thanks for your response I appreciate it.

Here’s a weird thought. I’m having a six string fiddle made, C and F bass strings. I have a friend who plays one. I currently play a five string and I love the idea of a five string cello since I can map my fiddle playing onto my Luis and Clark almost without thinking about it but now I’m thinking of a six string cello. Why not? The Viola da Gamba has six strings. It’s played fingering chords and there re tied gut frets for the first seven semitones. On the six string fiddle when young o,down to the F it sounds amazing. My friend will pull phrases down to the low register for effect and it’s amazing, so I ordered one from a maker I like. Still waiting but I’m thinking mid sept. I’m not rich but I can live on rice and beans for a while.

My friend just had a fadola made, an upgrade from her 5 string fiddle. Sounds awesome! I’ve played gambas before, they are great as well. You are right. Why not? It’s a mean balance for the maker to deal with such a huge tonal range. I actually think it might be easier on a small bodied instrument than a cello, but I could be wrong. I’d love to hear it!

As a guy who has a five string fiddle and plays (barely) a Luis & Clark cello. I’d be very interested in a five string cello with an e string. Something in my head maps fingering from fiddle to cello on same note strings and I’d probably be at home quickly on a C to E cello. I play mostly Irish music but had some serious injuries a few years ago that sidelined me for over a year. L & C makes five strings but I’m afraid that they probably use the same neck and I’ve got fat fingers. Fiddles and radio controlled airplanes are keeping me broke!!!!
@RockStarOscarStern6344 жыл бұрын
They're slightly thicker necks but you can play Violin pieces down an Octave on the 5 String Cello tuned C to E.
